I watch the happy couple leave hand-in-hand and I want that. I’m actually jealous.
“Good job.” Natalie joins me on the bench I just sat down on.
“I’m committed.” Apparently, people love comebacks such as mine. The first episode ofTake a Hitbroke records for a premiere. Skye and I almost forgot the cameras were there when we started talking. We had a lot more to say to each other than I thought.
On top of that, I’m being filmed picking up trash on the side of the road as part of my community service. We didn’t go to jail for what we did to Ever, but we did make a deal to do community service. Since I’m filming, I have the okay to do it wherever I am and since it’s filmed, the sheriff will know.
“We have to hit the road. Need to be in Chicago ASAP. Rachel is waiting.”
She is. I also know the guy that is stepping into the ring for her is a pro. I’ve never fought him in an actual fight. No, I fought him after I found him fucking my wife. I didn’t know that Rachel and Carson knew each other. Makes me a little leery of this visit. Did she seek him out because she is hurt and wants revenge? Guess I’ll find out. Since Carson is a pro, I don’t have to hold back. That makes me smile.
I throw my bag in the SUV and climb into the back. Brick is driving and Ariel is in the passenger seat. Natalie is riding with Sal and Serafina.
I wonder what Ever is doing right now. I want to call her, but I doubt she’ll pick up.
“She’s enrolled in school,” Ariel says as if she can read my mind.
“You asked the question out loud,” Brick chuckled.
“I know she’ll do well.”
“Do you want to know where?” Ariel asks.
“Sal said if I make it to the end, he will tell me.”
Ariel just nods.
I fall asleep, hoping I can make it through all of this because I really need her. I missed out on so much by choosing the wrong person.
Chapter Thirty-Three
Ever
“Time.” And that is the end of his match. I caved and watched it. He let that guy win. I guess he is Sasha’s new boyfriend. Good for her.
I’ve learned through all of this that even if a girl is mean to someone, you should still support them.
“Sweetie?”
My dad. I came to dinner at the house. Ivy cooked, and Austin and Linc are here. Kind of like a family dinner. Ivy wanted to start a tradition. Anne was even invited but stayed home.
Austin’s daughters are here as well. That makes me at ease. Timber is a year or two younger than me and she’s a riot.
“Did you watch the show?” Timber asks as Linc hands me a beer.
“Yeah. I caved.”
“I think it was funny, letting that guy take hits.”
“I don’t think that Ever wants to talk about Memphis,” Linc snaps.
“Oh shit, sorry.” Timber looks down at the ground. Not her fault Memphis is a dickhead.
“Lincoln, it’s okay. How are my chickens?” Timber has started helping out around the farm.
“Good. Linc has been letting me feed them,” she responds.
The doorbell rings and Skye joins the party.
