“Just take her to the airport,” Sal calls out. “We’ll send her stuff to her.”
“Why did he call us Team Snowy?” Mallory asks as we head back to the tables.
“Duh,” I point at Snow.
We all giggle as we head back to join the guys. I catch Lincoln watching me, and I see he picked the mean girl Mallory was talking about. Great, I can only guess what I’ll hear when we’re all together again. Maybe I should have gone home.
“No, we need you here,” Mallory grabs my hand and squeezes it.
I just smile at her and sit back next to Zack. I don’t know what I need anymore. I feel sick knowing he’s talking to someone else, even though I shouldn’t.
Chapter Sixteen
Lincoln
Iwatch Zack with Skye. I shouldn’t feel anything, but I do, and I don’t know how to process it. I still need to talk to her, I just need to find the right time.
“Lincoln, it’s time to go,” Lily calls my name. I don’t know why I picked her. She’s everything Skye is not, well, the old Skye. The Skye who hurt Ever and me, Lily rivals her in every sense of the word. I despise her and yet I picked her. What was I thinking?
“Yeah, I’m coming,” gathering the change box to give to Sal. I can’t wait to get back and move on to the next competition. I wish this was all over.
“She’s such a bitch,” Lily says to one of the other girls, Kelsey I think her name is.
“I don’t even know why she’s here,” Kelsey replies.
“She needs to be the center of attention,” Lily says, trying to grab my hand. I pull away, earning a glare. Why are women so bitchy? It’s last season all over again.
“What’s wrong, sexy?” She tries to grab my arm and I pull it away.
“Learn your place,” I hiss and I walk off. I shouldn’t have to explain that or anything. Her place is not with me or acting like we’re boyfriend and girlfriend. Lily already acts like a crazy ex. I don’t need that. On top of all of it, she looks familiar.
I ride in a separate car, needing to be away from catty women and Zack.
As soon as we get back to the homestead, Sal calls us over to the tree.
“Guys and gals, there will be an elimination competition tonight. Original partners. Lowest score leaves, highest score gets dinner on the porch.”
“How does that work since Dayton doesn’t have a partner,” Snow asks.
“He and Lily will be partners since she was Larry’s,” Sal informs us.
Dayton cringes when Sal says this. I don’t blame him.
Everyone looks nervous. We just had an elimination earlier today. He’s speeding things along.
“What’s the competition?” Zack asks.
“You’ll find out. Take an hour with your partner and meet back here.” Sal walks off, joining his wife and Shane on the back porch, smiling smugly to himself.
What does he have up his sleeve?
I see Skye break off and head to the barn. I need to talk to her, so now would be a good time.
I lean up against the barn door and watch her as she sings softly to Sammy. He’s a good horse. And she has a sweet singing voice.
“Skye,” I say softly. She jumps and turns to me, sadness in her eyes.
“I won’t let you down, whatever it is. Ever says you need this.” Thanks, Ever.
