“Why?”
“Because I’m toxic to you,” she replies. This is a drastic change.
“What?”
“You need to win, I don’t.”
“But I need you.”
“You don’t,” and she yanks her hand a way. We went from such a great date to nothing. Two steps back.
I just lay down and try to get some sleep, with lots of questions in the air.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Skye
Idon’t want to leave, but Lily has something on me that no one needs to know. I had a great date, loved dancing with Linc. It was all going so well.
I told Sal some of what was going on.
And I wonder where he finds the girls for the show. Kelsey says I know her, but I don’t. I don’t think I do. I need a breather from this. And Mallory is another story. She didn’t act like she was surprised when Lily showed up to the bar. I have been avoiding her ever since. Lily spilled all my secrets to Mallory. She promised she wouldn’t tell, but I don’t think I trust her. If I leave, I can keep the secrets that will destroy people I love.
I don’t fall asleep. Instead, I listen to Linc’s breathing, focusing on everything that should have been had I not been such a selfish bitch. Fate is not kind to people. I can’t stay here any longer. And I know when he wakes up, he will be grumpy. Linc is not a morning person. He needs caffeine to function, like seven cups, before you can talk to him.
I remember the first day of shooting, he woke up in a mood. I steered clear of him since he still hated me at the time, but Alexa tried to talk to him and his response to her had her running for the hills. I giggled when it happened. I have teased him ever since.
I head for the barn. I find feeding the chickens is soothing.
“You’re always feeding those chickens,” Zack steps out of the shadows, smoking a cigarette.
“Put that out, you’ll start a fire,” I hiss at him.
“Like the fire you started in my heart?” Oh God, is he really trying to use cheesy lines on me?
“Is that a pick-up line?” Please say something else.
“Is it working?”
I bend over laughing, shaking my head. Umm, no, it’s not working. I always wondered why guys try to use them. Maybe it is to make the girl laugh, break the ice. Coming from this guy, it doesn’t work in his favor. He’s pathetic.
“It’s true though. I think you are a beautiful woman and I would love to call you mine,” he says, taking another step closer.
“No, thanks. I think you’re nice and all, but you’re not my type,” I reply.
“Like Lincoln is?” I can feel the anger in his voice.
I nod, “Linc is mine.” I hope, but I could be wrong.
“My loss,” he blows a puff of smoke at me and walks out.
Thank heavens he’s gone. What a weirdo.
I gather the feed and head for the chicken coop.
“Such a slut,” I hear a female voice.
“She always was. Kelsey told me she slept with anyone with two legs, even women,” another female says. I think it’s Victoria and Kara.
