What in the ever-loving fuck? How could they do this to my dog?

“Linc?” Memphis calls from the porch. I scoop up my dog and head out to the porch to find Memphis and the sheriff.

“Linc, you’re trespassing,” the sheriff says as he steps behind me to close the door and lock it.

“This is my place.” I want to kick the door back open, but I can’t bring myself to do it.

“I’m sorry, son, but it’s not. Your parents sold it.” They can’t sell it. It’s mine.

“That’s impossible. My grandfather left it to me.” And then I check my account. My personal one has money in it, but the joint one with my mom is empty except for a hundred dollars. Fucking bitch!

“I don’t understand.”

“I know this is hard for you, son. I don’t know the semantics of the story. I was just called and told there was someone on the property,” the sheriff says.

“And my accounts?” I ask since I just checked and the one with my mother is nearly empty.

“I don’t know about that, just that they sold the ranch a few days ago. I have to ask you to leave.” But this is mine.

“Who did they sell it to?” Memphis asks.

“A company known for putting up mini malls,” the sheriff informs him.

My life is falling apart. What am I going to do?

“Come on, Linc, you can stay with us.” Memphis takes my dog from me, and we walk back to the car. He places Buddy gently in the back and opens my door since I’m not functioning properly right now.

I’m stunned. I know something isn’t right. My grandfather left this ranch to me. How could my parents do this to me? Well, how could my mom do this to me? My signature had to be forged for them to sell it, that’s the only way. I would never have agreed to sell the ranch. This is my home and my livelihood.

I have nothing now. It’s gone.

“We will figure this out and you always have that offer from Sal.”

To doChicken Fried Love. If I do, I’ll at least have a roof over my head, and by the end of the show, I’ll have money in my pocket. Sal offered me that consultant job, so maybe I should say yes. Yeah, I help Shane out when he does his catering, but my ranch was my life, how I made my living. I didn’t even notice my cows were gone until just now.

My life really does suck.

“Can we go get a drink?” I feel the need to drown in my sorrows.

“Sure.” Memphis pats my shoulder and heads to town.

“Can we drop Buddy off at the vet?” My poor dog. I will never leave him again.

“Yes, buddy, we can drop him off.”

“You think he will live?” I don’t think I can take much more shit. If I lose Buddy, I might not recover.

“Yes, he’s probably just dehydrated. I texted Timber, so she knows we’re coming.”

“Thank you,” I mutter.

We pull into the vet and I just can’t move. I watch Memphis carry Buddy inside. I am numb all over. I watch Memphis thank Austin’s daughter and slide back into the driver’s seat.

“You still want a drink? Beau is waiting for us. He upgraded the bar so now we can get steaks. You want a steak?” Memphis is trying really hard to cheer me up. I have to give him props. He would be the last person I would want helping me or the last person I would think would help me. That was before he and Ever got back together, but now he’s probably one of the only people who cares. I know in my heart that’s not true, but I’m throwing a pity party for myself right now.

I nod my head. I have no idea what I’m going to do now, but at least I’ll have a good meal, probably one of my last. I can’t rely on Memphis and Ever forever, even though they would let me. I need to figure out how to get my ranch back.

We walk into Beau’s bar and I wrinkle my nose. What the hell happened to this place?
