“Ladies, you will be manning the booths by yourselves for a few hours. Same booths, but you will have different partners join you after the men compete in a bull riding competition.”
Okay, didn’t see that coming. I know three of us will be prepared. That’s not the right wording— Jimmy, Mason, and I have done bull riding before, but there’s no actual way to prepare. It’s a rush, though. The part I didn’t like was how he said we get new partners. I don’t want anyone else around Skye. I shouldn’t care, but I do.
“Hold up, some of us have never been on a bull,” Larry asks. Stupid name for a stupid rocker.
“We understand that,” Sal nods. “Those three will have to do it blindfolded.” He points at the three of us cowboys.
Blindfolded? That’s a joke because most of the time my eyes are closed. What is this man up to?
“You will have people there to help you get as prepared as possible. Whoever wins, gets to choose their partner. Last man goes home.”
“That leaves one girl without a partner,” another guy says.
“Yes, ladies, after your partners get back, you will participate in a pie contest.”
“Like we have to bake?” Shelley sneers like it’s beneath her.
“Yes, you have to cook. Oh, and Skye, since you and Linc did the best, you can already pick your new partner for the day. I see Skye’s eyes flip to mine, showing all the sadness and anger in them.
“I’ll pick Zack,” she points at a guy who looks like he couldn’t hurt a fly. He has glasses, and a man bun, reminding me of what a geek looks like, or what I imagine a nerd or geek looks like.
“Zack, you don’t have to participate. You can join Skye at her table,” Sal says and Zack makes his way over to Skye. He puts his arm around her shoulder and I see red.
“Keep yourself in check,” I hear in my ear. Memphis. Can jealousy be seen through body language? Yep, I’m jealous.
“It’s a game, Lincoln,” he adds. I just nod.
“Can I ask you a question?” Sal has walked away and I just need to know some things.
“Sure.”
“When did you really know Ever was the one?”
He laughs, “Since she was five.”
“But . . .”
“I knew she was young, and I wanted her to grow up. I was blinded by what I thought Skye represented. But Ever was always the one. I did some stupid things, but I figured it out along the way.”
“How can you forgive when someone breaks your heart?”
“That’s a question for Ever. I’m sure it took her a long time to forgive. And doing the show didn’t help. But she’s a genuine person and I love her.”
“Thank you,” I just nod and watch Skye walk away and head to the carnival with Zack. Should be me.
Chapter Fifteen
Skye
Iwanted to choose Linc, but after yesterday, I needed a break. Sal did explain that we don’t change cabins, so if I don’t sleep in the loft, I will have to see him. I know I was dreaming, but I thought I heard him come in and check on me, even removing my shoes.
But he wouldn’t do that. Would he?
I turn my attention to the guy sitting next to me. He is not even my type. He has some tattoos, so small you’d hardly notice, and he has glasses. He’s cute, but not my type, so he’s safe for me right now. I just needed safe.
“Skye, Zack, you guys have a car waiting to take you on a date. Have a good lunch,” Sal says before walking away from the table.
“Shall we?” And I just nod.
