“I want to say I’m sorry about yesterday,” I tell her as I take a few steps toward her.
“Why do you have to apologize?”
“It was mean of me to call you stupid.”
“I am stupid,” she says as she turns back to the horse.
“Why would you say that?”
“Because I am. I was stupid in marrying Memphis. I was stupid for leaving. I was stupid for bullying Ever. My whole life has been stupid,” she says sadly. “The first chance I get, I’m leaving the show. I don’t want to ruin it for you. I’m sure Lily is a perfect match.”
What the fuck?
“Lily is nothing,” I tell her, taking another step toward her. I need to put my hands on her, I need to feel her. This right here, her vulnerability, that’s what I fell in love with. I need her, all of her, right now.
“I’m nothing to you.” I see her wipe a tear a way and I grab her, pulling her to me.
“I loved you from our first date.”
“You hate me,” she points out.
“I did. I hated what you did to Ever. I hated that you left me. But you’re the only one I ever wanted.” That’s the truth. I’ve never looked at another woman like I’ve looked at Skye.
I can feel her shaking as she sobs. I just hold her. She needs this. I think we both needed this.
“I want to get to know you all over again,” I say and it’s the truth I never wanted to admit.
She nods, wiping her eyes. She goes to the mirror on the wall and checks her reflection, making sure she doesn’t look like she’s been crying.
“But first, we have a competition to get to,” I chuckle.
“Sal is up to something,” she observes.
“I was thinking the same thing,” I say as we head out to the big tree in the middle of the yard, wondering what the future holds.
Chapter Seventeen
Skye
I’m not sure how I feel about the talk in the barn. We have a lot more to say. Some I don’t want to confess. And my secret? Yeah, that’s a no. Not only would he hate me all over again, but so would Memphis and Ever.
But I needed a good cry. And I felt safe in his arms. I want more of that. I’ll take whatever I can get from Linc.
“Everyone, welcome to trivia night. We will play jeopardy style, no you don’t have to form the answer in a question, it’s just trivia. Yes, it’s for real money, that will be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice. If you want to take your places behind the podiums with your names, and try out your buzzer,” Sal says. We all move to our perspective places. Linc tries out the buzzer as does everyone else.
“Your hosts for this evening are London and Saylor. To see who goes first, we revert to the total sales for today from the fair. Those winners are Snow and Dayton. So since they aren’t an original couple, we will flip a coin to see who chooses the first category.”
“Heads,” Dayton calls.
“Tails. Snow, you may pick the first category.”
She and Jimmy talk for a bit before she turns to say what she’s chosen.
“Astronomy for two hundred,” Snow says.
“Where is the Sea of Tranquility?” Saylor reads the question.
No one buzzes in.
