“Thank you,” I reply.

“There is a reason I paired you two up, you and Skye. I was hoping you two would get past all the shit and work it out.”

“I figured that was your plan.” I knew he was up to something.

“But instead, you listen to stupid shit and do dumb things and look what happened.” He’s not wrong. I did something dumb.

“I know. This show brings out the worst in some people.”

“It does and that’s why I will keep doing it— ratings. But you are also much older than the others, so I thought you would have your head on straight. You did for the competitions, but you did not with the rumor mill.”

“I know,” I nod sadly.

“I hope you find your happy ending, Linc.”

“Me too.” I do want one. I need one, deserve one. I think everyone does.

“I might need you though. We are still doing the roping competition and could use your expertise.”

“I’d like that,” I admit.

“I’ll call you in the morning. Today, they’re going to catch fish by hand,” Sal grins and heads off to the group. I laugh because it’s going to be funny as hell.

“You’re horrible,” Ariel joins me on the porch.

“You know you laughed too when you heard they have to catch their lunch with their hands.”

“Not going to lie, I did,” she laughs again.

Brick brings out some tea and we just sit on the porch and watch the drama unfold. Alexa is spot-on, egging Victoria on by whining about the task.

“She’s good,” Brick says and I agree with him.

“Sal wants ratings and Alexa promised to deliver by getting under her skin. I think she’s doing a great job.”

“Spoiled brats always whine,” Ariel says.

“I spoil you,” Brick teases.

“But I don’t whine,” she winks.

I just roll my eyes. Bunch of goofballs.

“I have a guy bringing in a head of cattle from Texas,” Brick says.

“That’s good. I appreciate all of this.” I do. I don’t know what I would do without these people. They’re not just friends, they’re family.

“Still don’t know who bought it back for you?”

“No, Ever won’t tell me. I’ve tried bribing half the town, but no one will budge.”

“Maybe it was someone who has a good heart,” Ariel replies.

“I’d like to thank them someday.” I really want that chance, to thank the person who helped me out. It was a generous gift.

“Just get yourself back together and that’s good enough,” Brick says.

“I’m trying,” I say just as Kara goes head-first into the pond. I burst out laughing as she comes out screeching, soaking wet.
