“So why steal from me and run?”

“Angie waited for her right time. I was no help and I didn’t even know. I put some of this together once I sobered up. You put a roof over our head, paid for everything. Her reasoning now, no idea. I didn’t forge the signature. Or sell the ranch. I had gone on a binger when you went with Memphis. I came home one night, crashed on the couch, only to be told I needed to leave. She was already gone. I didn’t even know the ranch was sold until that morning I was woken up.”

“Who told you to leave?”

“The developer she sold the ranch to. I didn’t want the sheriff to come out, so I grabbed what I could and left.”

“She called me for money, which I don’t get. I had millions in there, but she claims she is broke.”

“She is broke. I closed all the accounts and put the money in a new one she couldn’t get a hold of.”

“Why would you do that and not let me know?”

“After I did that, I checked in here. For the first couple of months, we’re rarely allowed visitors or calls. I was focusing on getting cleaned up before all this happened.” Pretty mature of my father.

“I’m your only visitor?”

“You are.”

“I’m a little upset you’ve lied to me this whole time.”

“I know I fucked up and I wish I could have been a better father.”

“You said she promised me to someone— who?”

“I don’t know the guy’s name, but the daughters . . .”

“Daughters?”

“Oh yeah, left that out. She cheated on me numerous times with this asshole and had two daughters. She didn’t care who married you, just that it would make all your money hers in a way. I believe their names were Lily and Kelsey.”

“Holy fuck,” I mutter.

Guess that solves one mystery.

“I don’t get it, though. They were on the show with me, but never said anything to me about who they were. They went after Skye, though, and knew things about her that no one else did.”

“Angie brought the daughters over a couple times a year, but you were always caught up in that pretty little girl that you never paid them any mind. They were real jealous. Jealous of Skye. You get your looks from me, so I knew they had to be in love with you.”

I snort at that. “Cocky.”

“Hey, now.”

“Go on,” I laugh.

“Skye took up all your time. By the time she was in high school, you were inseparable, even despite the age difference. You were always friends, even when she was talking to Memphis. Everyone knew you two loved each other.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“You still love her, you’re just stubborn, like your mother.”

“Thanks.”

“Skye is the one who needs to put those girls in their place. She is the only one who can claim her territory.”

“I think I pushed her away.”

“You can always get her back. It’s called apologizing.”
