“It’s not the Beasts you have a problem with,” the older man on the phone says.
“What the fuck? We took out two of your men, they killed an innocent man,” I bark into the phone.
“We might want into your territory, but it’s not us.If they were wearing Beast cuts, they made them somehow. Or stole them. I should check my guys.”
“Then who would it be?” I wonder out loud.
“I’m not going to lie, I would love to have your territory, the canals, the swamps. They’re the way to move product without being caught.I’m not stupid though, especially not with my daughter in town.”
His what? His daughter lives here?
“I’m sorry? What?”
“My daughter. Plum is my daughter.”
“What the fuck?” I feel like I’m going to be repeating this for a while.
“She doesn’t know about clubs and such.I’ve always kept it from her.Her sister on the other hand, she stole from the club, that’s why I washed my hands of her.Plum always looked out for her sister and that’s how she ended up in California.I’m guessing you tried to do a background check on her husband and nothing came back,” he chuckles.
“I did.”
“You won’t find it under that name.Sawyer was one of my men, a nomad. He was there to look after her, not fall in lust with her.They knew each other growing up, but never dated until he followed her.His cover was a banker.Only he fucked up everything. I haven’t called Plum because I don’t even know what to say.I’m definitely not going to start a war where she might get hurt.”
“Wait, you said he was one of your men,” I interrupt him.
“After Plum found him in bed with her sister, he went dark. I haven’t heard from him.I’ve been trying to find him. I think he’s coming for her. He tries to play off this nice guy, but he’s the worst of the worst. I should have sent someone else to watch her. I think he went for her against my wishes because of her grandfather. Plum knows she has an inheritance, but she doesn’t realize the extent of the amount. She has billions and doesn’t even know it.”
“What the fuck? Why would you keep it from her?”
“For this reason—if anyone knew it, they would either try to marry her or kill her. If she dies, her sister gets it.”
I have warning bells going off in my head.What if it’s her husband that is here?
“I think you should come for a family visit,” I growl into the phone before hanging up. Hopefully he will pick up on what I’m feeling and be here within the day. He’s not that far away. Plum has been lied to most of her life.I’m about to lie to her when I see her. I’ve been avoiding her ,so I don’t have to break her heart. Or mine.
“Stetson,” I holler from my office door.
“Yeah, prez,” he sticks his head in.
“Put a few more men at the inn. I’ll text Gator,” I tell him.
“You’re not going over there?”
“Nah, I got shit to do,” I lie. We both know I have nothing right now.
“Okay,” he shrugs taking off.
I’m a dick.I know I am.But her safety does come first.

Gage was home after a few hours, talking my ear off about his day with Noah.I’m supposed to go over to Zoe’s house later, but for now Gage and I are taking a walk.
“Mom, I really like it here,” he says as I hear a noise from behind me.
“Looks like Zion found a new toy to play with,” a man steps out from behind a tree, and I immediately push Gage behind me.
