Three
MASE
Iwoke up disoriented with two tiny dark grey eyes staring at me.
When I looked at him, I saw it.
I saw me in his face and it all became real.
He sat on the wooden coffee table, his legs crossed, he chin resting in his hands. He wore Iron Man pajamas and his hair was all over the place.
“Who are you?” he asked as if a man waking up on his couch happened enough times for him not to be concerned. Hell, for all I knew, Grace had men in and out of here.
“Mase.” I rubbed my face and sat up. “Who are you?”
“Cason.” He nodded and stared.
I studied him. He also had some of Grace’s features. He had her nose and her skin tone. He was a good-looking kid.
“What time is it?” I looked at my watch, but couldn’t quite focus.
“Seven o’clock.” He said without looking at anything.
I slept hard for three hours. More than I had slept in the last two weeks.
“You’re a friend of Mommy’s?”
“He was my best friend.” Grace walked into the room in a white tank top and black shorts. Both times I’d seen her, she’d been all decked out in her leathers with her cut on, all badass biker chick style. Even last night in her skinny black jeans and clunky boots, she wore her cut.
Now she looked more relaxed, more like the Grace I remembered.
“You remember me telling you about the boys I grew up with, Mase and Mattie?” She pushed his hair down and leaned over and kissed the top of his head. “Get your little butt off the coffee table.” She patted him on his backside.
Cason stood up and pouted.
“He has his boots on the couch.”
I slid them off the cushion and sat up.
“If he ruins my couch, he has money to pay for it.” She stood with arms crossed over her chest, a grin on her face.
“I have money.” He mimics her stance.
“Where did you get money?”
“Josey gave it to me for making my bed.” The little guy’s eyes grew wide.
“Josey is giving you money to do what you’re supposed to do?” Grace’s arms dropped.
“I mean.” Cason dropped his arms and signed. “For helping her with her chores.”
Gracie glared at him.
He gave up and flopped on the couch next to me.
Grace giggled and shook her head.
The kid turned to me. His expression changed.
