MASE

We fucked out the tension between us, but what now.

I ran my thumb up and down her finger as my mind flew through a bunch of strategies and scenarios. They all came back to one conclusion.

My father’s image flashed in my mind. I stiffened.

How was I going to keep Grace and Cason safe?

She ran her hand across my face.

“What are you thinking so hard about?” She leaned over and kissed my forehead.

“As soon as I saw him, I knew you were telling the truth.”

She sat back, her whole body stiff.

“I watched him all last week, thinking no fucking way could my father turn over his own son, but …”

She ran her hand through my hair.

“Why did he do it?” The sound of my voice surprised me.

“I don’t know,” she whispered. It took Grace a minute to answer me. “Mattie was really scared and when I suggested we run away and find you, he was reluctant.”

I sat up and turned around.

“I reminded him that you would know what to do.” She pushed the hair off my forehead. “You always know what to do.”

God, the hope in her voice hurt my heart.

I sat up scooted to the edge of the bed.

I wrung my hands and willed my brain to think. She wanted answers, a plan, but I had no idea what step one was.

“We have to go,” I said.

“Go where?”

“Away, far away from here.” I grabbed her arm. “You, me and Cason, we leave everything behind and we go. I have more than enough money to set us up somewhere where we will be safe and won’t have to look over our shoulder all the time.”

“Are you fucking kidding?” She held her hands up and laughed. “Where is this fucking fantasy land you’re talking about?”

“Watch your fucking mouth, Gracie.”

She glared at me.

I waited for her to challenge my reprimanding, but she let it go.

“What do you propose we do?” She asked.

I didn’t like her attitude either, butI let it go.

“What is your plan?” I asked.

“Fuck his shit up.”
