“You stupid asshole.” Amari kicked the legs out from under the guy to her right.
Carlos had enough. He stomped over to her and pressed the gun at her forehead.
“I could live with the fifteen percent, little lady.” Amari closed her mouth, but her eyes spoke volumes. I had to get his attention off of her and back on me.
I laughed.
Carlos turned around.
“What’s so funny, my friend?” Carlos leaned against the wall between Amari and me. He twirled my gun to further piss me off.
It worked. I laughed more.
“Shut the fuck up.” Miguel slapped the back of my head.
“Please enlighten me.” Carlos pointed the gun at Amari. She flinched, but she wasn’t scared, she was too pissed off.
“Amari was right.” I nodded. Dammit, she called it.
“About?” He waved the gun.
“I told her you’d have no good reason to betray me.” I shook my head. “Thought you were better than the bullshit. Turns out you’re nothing more than a fucking gangster.”
I grinned.
Carlos grinned back.
I winked.
He raised the gun.
I smirked.
He pulled the trigger.
The sound exploded in the enclosed space, followed by the most deafening silence. I sensed Amari’s scream and felt the pressure before the pain exploded in the center of my chest. I fell backward and went numb for a second. The pain ignited as I collapsed onto the stone floor.
I blinked and looked up into Amari’s beautiful face. Tears streamed down her cheeks.
Her lips moved, but silence surrounded me. I felt her love and her desperation. I appreciated the former, and my body ached from the latter along with the hole in my chest.
Amari was pulled away from me. I reached for her in my head, but my arms wouldn’t move. If they thought she was fierce before, they had seen nothing yet.
Fight, baby.
I love you so much.
It was the last thought I had before another gunshot rang out. My head jerked back, and my world went black.
