Icontinued to fight back. They dragged me away from him. I kicked, clawed, and screamed. I bit one of them and he dropped me. I scrambled toward Caden’s body laying on the cold stone floor. Blood blossomed from his chest. His eyes closed.

“No,” I screamed. “Help him.” I made it a few inches, my fingers reached out and tingled from the brief contact before they dragged me away again.

I fought.

Caden told me to fight until he came for me.

But he can’t come for me now.

The pain hit my heart and crawled up my throat. Tears dripped from my eyes. I blinked them away. No time to cry. I would not let them take me. People survived gunshot wounds. Caden might be fine.

One of Sinezilio’s guys covered my mouth with a cloth. I inhaled. I clawed at the hands to get a breath. A rancid smell burned my throat and nostrils. The world slowed down. My vision blurred. Sounds muffled around me.

“Is he dead?” A voice behind me sounded like Johnny Sinezilio.

Carlos nudged Caden with his foot.

I strained, blinking my eye to focus, to sense any movement. There was none.

“As dead as he’s going to be?” Carlos’ sinister grin no longer looked handsome. I reached out toward him, but one of his goons pulled them back to my side.

Johnny took a photo of Caden and kicked him in the side.

Caden didn’t flinch.

“No one takes what belongs to me.” He turned and walked toward me. He lifted my chin.

I recoiled from his touch. He placed his lips to mine. My stomach turned.

“You are mine,” he whispered against my lips and kissed me again. “Merry Christmas, princess.”

I tried to push him away, but my limbs would not cooperate. My body weighed a ton. I blinked in and out of consciousness. Someone tossed me over their shoulder and threw me in the back of a car. It was the last thing I remembered before my world went dark.

A cool breezehits my face. I blink and sit up, rubbing my eyes. Salty air and yeast like from fresh bread makes me sneeze. I sniffle and push the covers off. My bare feet hit the smooth wooden floor of my bedroom. My brain aches. I scan the room and find Caden in the kitchen drinking cranberry juice from the bottle. A drop of juice dribbled down his chin.

My mouth waters and I lick my lips.My mouth was so dry.

He smiles at me.

I smile back.

“Merry Christmas, baby.” He sits the juice back on the table.

“Merry Christmas.” I reach out to him. “Come, give me a Christmas kiss.”

He walks toward me with a sexy smirk. His bare feet smack against the floor. I watch him as he puts one foot in front of the other.Something’s wrong.

He keeps walking. His expression remains.

“Come here.” I wiggle my fingers. He continues to walk in my direction but gets no closer.

I’m back in bed underneath the covers. I flip the bed sheet off of me again and attempt to get up, but my body won’t move.

I was covered in a blanket.I flip it off of me again.
