I knew I had it wrong.
I pushed the food out of the way and slid next to him. I wrapped my arms around his waist.
He lifted his head and pulled me into his arms.
“Sorry.” I kissed his check. “I went from zero to sixty pretty fast there.”
“Yeah, you did.” He nuzzled my nose with his.
“I know you want more for us, but I swear to you, all I need is this.”
“What?”
“Fresh fish from the ocean.” I plucked off a piece and fed it to him. “Great bottle of wine. The hottest man in existence.”
Caden chuckled.
“It’s not the location, babe. It’s the atmosphere and the company.” I nodded. “Favorite.”
He nodded in return.
I leaned in.
“You in the mood for dessert?” Caden nipped at my mouth.
“What did you have in mind?” I licked my lips.
“Blueberries.” He winked.
I laughed.
“I’ll clean this up.” I climbed off his lap. “Go pick some. I’ll meet you in bed.”
I picked up the platter and my wine glass and carried them into the house. I sat them on the counter and grabbed my phone. I scrolled to my Christmas playlist. Music filled our little house. It was hot tonight. I lifted my glass to my lips.
An alarm beeped and made me stop mid sip.
The hair stood up on the back of my neck.
I dropped the glass, it cracked but didn’t break. Wine splashed onto my toes. I stepped into the bedroom and spotted it on the computer screen. We had a visitor.
I craned my neck to see Caden squatting in the garden with a lazy grin on his face. He always looked relaxed when he worked in his damn garden. He talked to the fruit and vegetables. Usually it was a welcome distraction, but now was not the time.
Someone was approaching, and he had no idea.
