“We’ve been dating for months!” I yelled.

His jaw tightened. “No, we’ve been fucking for months.” He walked up and stared at me without a trace of emotion in his beautiful blue eyes. “Sin, I’m going away to college, and you’re staying here to work for your mother. It would never work out between us.”

He reached out to touch my hair, but I smacked his hand away.

He shrugged. “Take it for what it was. We’re over.”

I stood there feeling stupid that I’d allowed myself to be weakened after my dad’s death. I couldn’t believe I’d let Kyle into my heart and body. I never would have let him in if I had known he would hurt me and leave me drowning in the deep end.

“Over?” I froze like a deer in headlights.

Gasping for breath, I sank into the murky waters of an emotional abyss.

Then he went for the ultimate emotional bitch slap. “Let’s keep it real, Sin. What we had was fun but temporary. You and I know there’s no way in hell I could bring you home to my parents. You just don’t fit into my world.” His parting words burned, fueling my hate fire.

Jade nudged me, interrupting my disturbing trip down memory lane. “Sin, I’m not saying to forget. I’m saying you need to heal and let that shit go.”

“Let it go? I’ve done that, but the healing part takes a willingness to open up my heart to a man who’s worthy. I’ve met men who are losers, liars, users, and looking for another heart to break, but I haven’t met anyone worthy.” I pursed my lips. “But that’s the story of my fucked-up life. Always finding Mr. Wrong.”

“I refuse to give up just because we’ve both kissed more than our share of frogs. That shit doesn’t mean Mr. Love Me Right isn’t out there.”

I looked at her like she’d lost her damn mind. “Are you kidding me?”

Jade regarded me with a pained expression before waving over the pretty-boy bartender. “We’re going to need more drinks over here.”

Already anticipating our need, he brought over two more drinks, and then he moseyed away. Jade sat up, peering over the bar.

I snapped my fingers in her face. “Will you take your eyes off his ass?” I admonished, even though it really was an awe-inspiring butt.

As if sensing Jade’s heated stare, he grinned over his shoulder at her.

Jade bit her lower lip. “Damn. He’s yummy but absolutely not ‘the one.’” She made air quotes. “I’ve done more guys like him than I care to count. Gorgeous but dullsville in bed.”

I raised my glass in a mock salute. “Cheers to the few women in Manhattan who are crazy enough to take one for Team Single and Desperately Seeking a Good Fuck.”

Jade choked with laughter. “Finding a halfway decent man to fuck is like wading through a cesspool. It’s disgusting and leaves you smelling like shit.”

I gave her a playful nudge. “Exactly.”

To prove my point about the bleakness of the dating game, I quickly scanned the space. “Okay, prime example over there.”

I nodded in the direction of a table with flickering candlelight and a beautiful blond woman who was staring blankly at her date—a hot-looking guy with an artfully messy fauxhawk, probably thanks to gallons of hair gel. He was boasting loudly about rubbing elbows with celebrities, business moguls, and politicians during his recent trip to St. Thomas on his newly purchased yacht.

“See her blank-faced stare? I bet she’s contemplating which fake orgasm moan, high-pitched or low and throaty, she’ll use while he’s fucking her tonight.”

I nodded over to the end of the bar at the middle-aged man dressed like he’d just stepped off the red carpet for the teen awards. He draped his arm around a busty young brunette. Then he winked at me while licking the rim of his glass in an icky, sexually suggestive manner. “And Mr. Midlife Crisis over there is having some delusional fantasy about a threesome with me and that brunette pasted to his side.” I shuddered with distaste. “Hard pass on that shit.”

Jade smacked the bar. “True that. The problem is men are clueless about what women really want—foreplay and oral sex.”

I snorted. “Hence, the problem. Men wouldn’t know how to go down on a woman even if she wrote step-by-step instructions, taped them to her cunt, and shone a flashlight on them.”

Jade chuckled. “Exactly. That’s why I’ve been doing some serious thinking.”

Uh-oh. Not good.

She continued. “Don’t you ever wonder about what’s next in your life?”

“Are you fucking with me right now? Or are you running your lines for your movie?” I popped another appetizer into my mouth, chewing happily.
