“I wish I could tell her what’s going on.” I look at him, seeing him frown.
“What do you mean?” He watches me. Reads me.Fuck, I wish I could explain this. “She doesn’tknow?” His voice raises at the end in understanding.
“No. It’s complicated. I need to get the timing right.”
“Screw the timing.”
“No,” I cut him off, eyes locked on his, holding his gaze. “She’s doing so well. I can’t ruin it all because of my need to have some sort of a life with her.”
Finishing his pint, Jake scratches the side of his face. “I don’t know what’s going on, but the longer you leave it, the worse it could be for her.”
I know what he’s saying is true. Every part of me knows what he’s saying is right. “Shit.”
Danny lands three pints on the table, startling me.
I gaze at Jake, wanting him to tell me exactly what to do. Lord knows I need some fucking help. Because the deeper things get between Morgan and I, the harder it’s going to be. The more it’s going to hurt.
“Get these in ya’ boys,” Danny declares, handing out the beers.
“Thanks,” Jake says, side-eyeing me before he asks, “So tell me about the game.”
It’s half an hour later by the time Danny finishes explaining the entire match, and all the different positions he and Sarah got in to after it. Honestly, listening to him only made me think of Morgan and how much of a turn on it was seeing her undress in my old room yesterday.
I don’t know if anything will go further in the near future, but imagining what it will be like to actuallygofurther with her, makes a shiver run down my spine.
She was so perfect.
Her perfect body.
That underwear.
Her confidence.
“I need to go.” I grab my jacket and stand, feeling blood rush to places I don’t want my two mates seeing.
“So soon?” Danny asks, looking a little red in the cheeks from the beers.
“Yeah. I need to check in with the old man before I go check Morgan. She was pretty hammered last night.”
Danny grins. “So was Sarah.”
“And on that note, I better get back too. Cat and I have a weekend off together.” Jake pushes out his chair as he stands.
“I recommend getting hammered.” Danny blasts Jake a finger gun.
He and I exchange a confused look, both choosing to ignore Danny.
“Was good seeing you,” I tell Jake, holding out my hand.
He takes it but drags me into a hug.
“Now who’s being the sap?” I mutter.
Straightening, he looks at me. “Talk to her. Then once that’s done, it’d be good to have you back on duty.”
I nod my appreciation, giving him my best smile. I wasn’t lying when I told Morgan I was ready to get back to work. I’m not denying it won’t be easy, but my job is my life. I miss it.
“Alright, same time next weekend, lads?” Jake asks.
