While I still worried about Evan as Lucas carried me off, I sensed Chara was right and he would be okay. He was determined to heal and get back not just to us but most especially to Lilias, and I didn’t blame him. Though she’d remained quiet and submissive during everything that had happened, I caught the ever-so-brief flashes of fear for Evan in her eyes on more than one occasion.
“And ‘twill be that, her, that brings him back swiftly,” Lucas assured, carrying me on a familiar route to an equally familiar door, stopping long enough to look at me with his heart in his eyes. “It can be no other way when ye love a lass so fiercely. Yer inner beast would defy death itself to get back to her.”
I felt the last effects of whatever spell had been cast on me to make me forget fade, and my memories of Lucas’s chamber flooded back when he carried me over the threshold.
“Do you remember now?” I asked softly, prompting him to set me down, realizing why I might have seen a flash of this chamber and Evan’s dragon outside, even though I wasn't here at the time. Slipping my hand into Lucas’s, I smiled and drifted to the small balcony overlooking the frothing sea. “We wereteenagers, and you’d been trying to get me up here, but I thought it was too risky to come to the castle, so you encouraged Evan to dare me.”
“Aye,” Lucas murmured fondly. “And you took that dare, but only if he would finally shift and do a flyby so you could see his dragon.”
“I can’t believe I dared him to do that, given the discourse between your clans.” I shook my head and slid a small, womanly smile Lucas’s way. “But he did it for you because he wanted us to be together and knew just how much you wanted me to see your chamber.”
“Verra much so.” He reeled me close and tilted my chin until our eyes were aligned. “And ‘tisourchamber, lass.”
When he finally closed his lips over mine, that was it. Everything else faded as our kiss deepened and I lost myself to him all over again. I have no clue how we made it to the bed, only that it became a mad mix of yanking off and chanting off our clothes between kisses until he finally settled between my thighs, right where he belonged.
Taking him inside me again somehow felt better than before, and I knew it was because I had finally embraced my inner dragon and came together with my fated mate the way we were always meant to. I could tell by his groan of pleasure as he filled me that he felt the same. And it only got better from there as we moved together perfectly, and our pleasure built quickly.
So quickly, it wasn’t long before he slowed, his gaze found mine, and his dragon eyes flared. There was no need to ask if I was ready for him to take me in a way that could change our lives forever, because I made my answer clear when I wrapped my legs around him and encouraged him to keep moving.
When he did, it was more aggressive, and I loved it. Welcomed it, moving with him until he pressed deep and we let go together with strangled groans of pleasure. After that, it wasall a blur of pure, delicious sensation and an endless night of twisted limbs until we drifted off, stirring awake to a whole new day.
One that was going to surprise me in ways I never imagined.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
–Lucas–
IWANTED NOTHING more than to keep Hazel in bed until my seed was firmly planted, but the next day came, and with it, concern for Evan. Granted, we slept a great deal of the day away, yet still, he was the first thing on our minds when we woke.
“I never did get around to making your stew last night, did I?” she said once I finally let her out of bed after a few more kisses.
“Nay, but you satisfied me just the same.” Thankful for my aunt’s forward thinking, I pulled fresh clothes from my trunk for us both. Handing Hazel the dress, I wasn't surprised it was a lovely shade of lavender, suiting her well. I eyed her lush little body as long as I could before she slipped it on. “’Tis safe to say you more than satisfied me.”
“Same,” she murmured, enjoying my body just as much based on her lustful gaze before she glanced outside at the mix of weather, from dapples of sunlight to random snowflakes. “I’d say tonight will be an even better night for stew, though.”
“Without a doubt, ‘twill be for ye will be my wife by then.” I helped her with her plaid, frowning at her troubled expression. “Right, lass?”
“Of course, we’ll marry, but I was hoping Evan could be there too.” She shook her head. “It doesn’t seem right doing it without him.”
“Then let us go see how he fares,” I said softly, not just agreeing but wanting her to be happy. “And if we have to wait for him to get better, we will.”
Relief flashed in her eyes, and she rested her hand on my chest. “Are you sure?”
“Verra, because you’re right.” I brushed my lips across hers one last time. “Heshouldbe there.”
“Then you should probably come down to the War Chamber,”Aspen said telepathically as we left our chamber behind.
“Is everything okay?”Hazel asked, as concerned as I was, because we hadn’t sensed anything.“Did he take a turn for the worse overnight?”
“Everything’sfine,” she replied. “Justcomedown.”
So we did, pleasantly surprised and more than a little relieved to find Evan sitting before the fire with Uncle Marek and Aunt Chara. Aspen and Broderick stood by the window, and Flame was in his usual spot, curled up near the hearth.
“Evan,” Hazel exclaimed, smiling as he stood, albeit a bit slower than usual. He embraced her when she flew into his waiting arms and held on tight. “Thank God you’re okay!” She pulled back, wide-eyed, marveling at how much his bruises had faded overnight. “You look so much better.” Her brow furrowed. “How do you feel? Are you still in much pain?”
“Verra little.” He looked from Flame, who had trotted over to greet me, to Aunt Chara. “Those two work miracles.” The corner of his mouth curled up, and he patted his stomach. “As did yer special stew.” He squeezed her hand. “But none of it would have been possible if not for ye and yer bonnie dragon because I saw her in my mind’s eye.” His gaze grew serious. “I cannae thank ye enough, my friend, for saving me. ‘Twas truly courageous.”
“Anytime,” she said, squeezing his hand in return, her gaze just as serious. “Wewillget Lilias out of there and away from Dugal and Elspet if it’s the last thing we do, Evan. You have my word.”
