“Hey, pretty girl,” I said as I bent down and pet her. Molly licked my hand and jumped up on me, wanting more attention. Her soft fur brushed through my fingers and I looked around for Kane. “Where’s your Daddy? Is he hiding?”
“Hiding?” a snarky voice spouted off. “Unless your twins are like the freaky ones fromThe Shining, I’m good, dude.”
I loved his sense of humor.
For a while, I’d worried the incident on the job would take it from him, but as the weeks turned to months, more of the anxiety had washed away, and he was almost back to his old self. He was working again and seemed to always have a smile on that handsome face of his. Going to the shooting range had helped him on that front.
He carried himself with more confidence those days—not that fake confidence he used to have, but a more genuine one.
I stood and walked toward him.
He met me halfway, and before I could say a word, his strong arms were around me and his mouth was pressed to mine.
We pulled apart, but it was hard to move away from him. His green eyes were speckled with gold and looked lighter that day, and I wanted to spend the day getting lost in their depths—getting lost in the feel of the man who had my heart in his goofy hands.
However, we had to be at Anna’s in an hour, and she would raise ten kinds of hell if we were late.
“Let me change real quick, and then we can go,” I said, still not moving from his arms.
“Why?” he asked before kissing my neck. Goosebumps danced along my arms at the contact. “I think you look fucking hot in this suit. It’s the one good thing I love about the days you have court.”
Although it was difficult, I managed to break free and started walking down the hall to my room.
“Sherlock Holmes would wear a suit,” he called after me, and I snorted a laugh. “Just saying.”
In my room, my eyes automatically flashed to the book on my nightstand, and my smile widened.
Memories stirred of the night Kane first discovered I read Arthur Conan Doyle, and my heart warmed as I recalled how nervous I’d been about one-night stands. Thinking back on it, he’d probably been nervous, too, which was why he might’ve resorted to talking about books.
Shaking my head, I continued to my closet and stripped out of my suit.
Once I was changed into something more casual, Kane and I got into my car and left. Anna had asked me to pick up some drinks on my way over, so I stopped at the local grocery store to grab a few liters of soda.
Back in the car, I looked at Kane.
“You okay?”
He slowly met my gaze. “Yeah, I’m just kinda freaking. Is it normal to feel like you’re gonna puke your guts out?”
I leaned over in the seat until our faces almost touched. “That’s how I felt when meeting your dad. Now, it’s your turn.” When he rolled his eyes, I kissed him, feeling his tense body relax. “You have nothing to be worried about. They’re just two very opinionated children. What could go wrong?”
“Great,” he said in a flat tone. “That makes me feel so much better.”
