Had it really been a misunderstanding?

Kane had gotten to the door fast. If he’d been in the bedroom, wrapped around Devon, wouldn’t it have taken him longer? But he could’ve already been awake and in the kitchen. Or perhaps he’d slept on the couch.

My head spun with possible scenarios.

Needing more answers, I snatched my phone from the top drawer of my desk and scrolled through my contacts to find Kane. I called him, but he didn’t answer. So, I tried a second time. Still nothing. Not bothering to leave a voicemail, I hung up and put the phone away.

He’d return the call when he saw it.

I arrived at Theo’s school a little early to help him set everything up. The fair was taking place in the school gymnasium, and other students rushed around setting up their projects as well.

Another kid was doing a volcano experiment, but it didn’t look as great as the one Theo and I’d made. A girl placed glass vials on her table, and a boy beside us had a huge, cardboard maze.

“Daddy, I think I wanna be a science man when I grow up,” he said as we placed his volcano display on the small, white table.

He wore a button-up shirt and slacks, and I couldn’t believe how old he looked. He’d wanted to dress nice for his big day.

“Like a scientist?”

“Yeah.” He put his hands on his hips as he studied the volcano. Then, he reached to shift it over to the right a centimeter. “I want to see a real volcano someday!”

“There are different types of science, you know,” I said, placing my hand on his back. “Geologists, oceanographers, chemists, and biologists.”

“I’ll do them all!”

I smiled. He was such an overachiever.

“Your mom and Brian should be here shortly,” I told him after reading a text from Anna.

“Kane’s coming, right?” Theo asked, looking up at me with big, curious eyes.

“I’m not sure, little man,” I answered, hating the way his face fell at my words.

I hadn’t told anyone other than Anna about what happened between me and Kane, so they all believed we were still together.

“But he promised me he’d be here.” He looked down at his shoes.

Theo had gotten attached to Kane over the past few weeks—more so than I ever thought he would. He both looked up to Kane and considered him one of his best friends. Kane had that effect on people, though, with his silly and fun personality.

“There’s still about twenty minutes before it starts,” I said, wanting to say anything to wash the sadness from his eyes. “Maybe he’ll show up.”

Hope replaced the sadness on Theo’s face, and he turned back to his volcano. “I can’t wait to see what he thinks!”

I looked back at my phone and opened up mine and Kane’s text box.

Me:Theo’s science fair is today at 2:30. Please come, if you can. I know things are rough between us atm, but he wants you here.

So do I, I wanted to add, but didn’t.
