“I ran into someone from my past today,” I admitted, tearing my stare from his and walking to the sink.

Facing the window, I peered out into the spring day. Spring was a time for new beginnings, right? Maybe Ryker would be mine. If I didn’t scare him off first. If I could learn to fucking trust him and not be such an asshole.

Ryker walked up beside me, but stayed a few inches away. I both needed his touch and needed some space, but I was thankful he was keeping a small distance. I probably wouldn’t have been able to say what I needed to otherwise.

His back faced the window and he crossed his arms, tilting his head to look at me.

“You said earlier that ‘the abused has become the abuser,’” he pointed out, and his voice had a raspiness to it. He scratched at his jaw, something I’d come to associate with when he was thinking or worried. “And a while back you mentioned how you have issues that go back to high school. Is the person you saw today part of that?”

I nodded.

After taking several deep breaths and gaining back some composure—because there’d be no explaining the crap about Devon while I was in a bad headspace—I focused on him and started talking.
