“I’ll still love you. It’s your soul I fell in love with, Ben, not something as temporary as your physical body.” He trailed his finger up my neck and to my jaw. “And when it’s time for you to leave this world, I’ll follow close behind you.”
It hit me in that moment that this wasreal. That the love we shared, this soul-deep connection, would go further than this life. Many romances said the characters livedhappily ever after, but Theo and I actually would. My death—whenever it might be—would not be an end, but rather a beginning.
We sat in front of his tombstone for a while, holding each other in silence. When we finally stood, Theo’s hand slid into mine, our fingers linking.
“I love you,” he said. And just then, the sun broke through the clouds and shone down on us, hitting his porcelain skin. “Forever.”
“Forever,” I agreed.
