“Humans,” the other sang.
Still using his power of persuasion, Lorcan asked, “My father forbade you to harm humans. Tell me why you’ve been attacking them.”
“Because he told us to.”
“Who?”
“I know not his name,” the siren said, running her long fingers down her neck and to the dip between her breasts. “His hair was like moonlight and his eyes crimson.”
“Crimson like blood,” the other crooned, her voice dreamy and haunting.
“Ezra,” Alek said.
“Why did he want you to attack humans?” Lorcan asked.
“To start a war,” the leader answered. “To claim both the sea and the land.”
“When Ezra captured me in Black Hallows, he said something similar.” Alek released a shaky breath. “He said he planned to take over the humans, and once they were beneath his feet, he’d focus on the sea by killing Triton and taking his place on the throne.”
“Take over the humans?” I asked. “How?”
“By playing King James’ own game against him,” Malik said. “Gain his trust by allying with him, then once James has served his purpose, Ezra will cast him aside. James is only a pawn to him.”
“Why would James fall for the trick?” I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
“Who’s to say he has?” Lorcan asked. “James is no fool. He more than likely knows Ezra is using him. But he’s using Ezra too. Only those with the blood of Poseidon can wield the trident. The alliance was necessary for his plan to come to fruition. They both want my father dead.”
The sirens all hissed.
“Triton.”
“King of lies.”
“Murderer.”
“They clearly share Ezra’s feelings for Triton,” Alek said, resting a hand on Lorcan’s back. Lor instantly calmed at his touch. “I’m sure it took very little convincing for them to go along with the plan.”
“If they hate King Triton, why do they adore you?” I asked Lorcan.
Even while baring their fangs, the sirens hung on to Lorcan’s every word even when he wasn’t using his power against them.
“Beautiful prince,” the siren with hair the shade of honey hummed.
“Prince of prophecy.”
Lorcan frowned at them. “What do you mean? What prophecy?”
“A prophecy told long ago,” the leader said. The other three repeated her words in breathy whispers. “Of a vengeful son and the world he will create. One world of light and the other of darkness. Which will you choose?”
Lorcan paled.
“Farewell, beautiful prince of moonlight.”
The three sirens ducked beneath the water and swam away before Lorcan could say another word.
A vengeful son?Their words unsettled me even more.
It almost sounded as though Lorcan would turn against his father.
