God help me.
“You’re not scared of me?” Gray’s voice shook with the question.
“Not at all.”
“But you don’t like that I drink blood.”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. Because I didn’tknowthe answer. My head was too jumbled.
“I’m hungry.” Gray unwound himself from my arms and wiped at his eyes as he scooted off the bed. “I’ll meet you downstairs, ’kay?”
He was across the room and out the door before I could figure out what to say. I sat up, sighing as I ran a hand over the top of my hair. After pulling on a shirt, I walked into the hall and headed for the staircase.
“You look like shit,” Bellamy said, meeting me there. “Better than being ripped into pieces though. So you have that going for you at least.”
“Yeah, remind me to thank Simon later.”
After Raiden had taken Gray inside the mansion last night, Galen had lost what little control he’d had. His eyes had gone completely black, and his wings had exploded from his back.
“I’ll rip you apart with my teeth,”Galen had growled in a voice much deeper and raspier than his usual one.“And then I’ll scatter your bloody pieces into the sea for the sharks to feast on.”
Simon had jumped in the way right before the Nephilim had torn into me.
“I’m going to kill him!”
“No you’re not,”Simon had said, wrapping his arms around Galen.“Calm down, big guy. Let’s go back to bed.”
Galen had then snatched Simon up and flown off with him. Where they went? Fuck if I knew, but it definitely wasn’t back to their room.
“Simon’s still alive, right?” I asked Bellamy as we descended the stairs. “Galen carried him away like he was his dinner.”
“Oh, he ate him. Just not in the way you’re worried about.” He winked before growing more serious. “When Wrath takes him over like that, only Simon can calm his ass down. Gray can too sometimes. Probably why Galen’s so protective over him and why he gives you so much shit. He’s like a dad threatening his precious daughter’s first boyfriend.”
I snorted at that. But something stuck out to me. “First boyfriend?”
“Yeah, Gray doesn’t date,” Bellamy said. “He fucks a lot and has regular guys, like Nick. But he’s never been serious about anyone. Until you anyway.”
When Bellamy and I walked into the kitchen, Gray snapped his head in the opposite direction, avoiding my gaze. He then hopped down from the barstool and approached Raiden at the stove.
“I’m gonna help you cook,” he said, grabbing a spatula.
“Okay.” Raiden nodded to the glass bowl on the counter. “Can ya crack some eggs for me in there? Add a splash of water, and then whisk them really good.”
Gray peeked over at me through his blond bangs before quickly grabbing the carton of eggs. Avoiding things instead of facing them was something else we had in common. And damn it all, he was adorable as fuck as he tried his hardest not to look at me—and failing epically.
Once breakfast was ready, Raiden filled plates and handed them off—first to Gray, then to Bellamy. Galen and Simon had already left for the antique shop, so at least I wouldn’t run into Wrath.
“Guess you’re hungry too, huh?” Raiden asked me. He fixed another plate and gave it to me. The portion was smaller than everyone else’s. His way of punishing me. But it was still way more than one person needed, so it wasn’t much of a punishment.
I bit back a laugh. Even when mad at someone, Raiden couldn’t actually be a dick. He was too much of a caregiver.
“Thanks,” I said, taking the plate.
Not wanting to make the morning even more uncomfortable for Gray, I poured a cup of coffee and sat at the kitchen island instead of at the table. About a minute later, I heard the soft pad of feet on the floor, and arms came around me from behind.
“Hi,” Gray said, his face pressed to my back. His voice was muffled by my shirt.
“Hey there.” I turned on the barstool, and a strange flutter traveled through my heart when his big brown eyes peered up at me. “Your waffles are gonna get cold.”
