Konnar’s purple eyes glowed in the dim light of the club. He watched the patrons dance, fuck, and feed, all with a calm indifference. On the outside anyway. I sensed the lust coursing through his veins, the urge to bite and be bitten.
“I can read your thoughts, you know,” Konnar said, looking at me. “And they’re disturbing.”
“Disturbing because you can’t hide those desires from me? I bet you’re a kinky bastard when you’re not at work, aren’t you?”
The vampire smirked and returned his attention to the clubgoers. “How’s your demon doing? Still up to no good?”
Your demon.Shit. Why did that make my heart skip a beat?
“Because he’s your mate,” Konnar said, answering my unasked question. “Whether you want him to be or not, the fates chose him for you. Alastair has finally accepted this, I take it?” He studied my face.
Konnar could easily read my mind and get that answer for himself—clearly—but he tried to give us privacy. He didn’t dive into our thoughts often.
“Al has accepted it as much as he can,” I responded before lifting my drink to my lips. The ambrosia-laced rum had a nice burn as it went down my throat. “Phoenix has been at the mansion for four days, and his head is still intact. That’s more than I ever expected.”
“Of course he’s still alive,” Konnar said. “No matter how much your brothers hate him, they’d never hurt you that deeply.”
“Galen’s already tried to kill Phoenix.” My sternum clenched at the memory. “I had to literally fight him off. And Alastair? He wasn’t much better. He gave me a direct order to leave so he coulddispose of the threat. He changed his mind last minute, but still. The intent was there. So, you’re wrong about that, Kon. They’d kill Phoenix in a heartbeat.”
“Yet, he still lives,” Konnar pointed out. “That alone proves their love for you outweighs their desire for revenge.”
“You have more faith in them than I do.” I took another drink.
“That’s not true.” Konnar regarded me with a raised brow. “You know the intensity of their love for you. But that’s beside the point, I suppose. You’re here for a reason, and with your mate back at home, I gather that reason isn’t for you to satiate Lust.”
The reminder that Phoenix was at the mansion, left in my brothers’ care, caused my scalp to prickle. If they hurt a single hair on his head while I was gone, I’d bash all their skulls in.
“I came for him.” I nodded to the yellow-eyed reaper who had just appeared at the bar.
“Taeden?” Konnar asked, shock flickering across his smooth features.
“Not for sex,” I clarified before he got the wrong idea. “Phoenix gave us some information that Al told me to look into.”
“I’ll leave you to it, then.” Konnar tipped his head to me before walking away. A hot-as-hell Fae boy reached out for him, and Konnar politely dismissed the advance and continued toward the private lounge in the back of the club. Only a few times had the vampire accepted one of the advances made to him. At the club anyway. What he did in his own time was anyone’s guess.
I downed the rest of my drink before approaching the reaper.
“Want another piece of me, eh?” Taeden asked with a shit-eating grin. “Just like your brother.”
“Daman has no interest in you anymore,” I told him. The two of them used to fuck all the time. Daman had viewed the reaper as his boy toy, and Taeden hadn’t minded one bit. I had fucked him too once. “Neither do I.”
His yellow eyes narrowed. “Then what do you want? I’m kind of busy.”
When Taeden met my gaze, I sensed my eyes change to green. The exact same shade as Daman’s. The reaper could pretend not to care, but he’d been crazy about my brother. There was no hiding from the truth.
Even sadistic bastards like Taeden could fall in love.
“Answer a few questions, and then you can get back to chasing some tail,” I said, then nodded toward the hallway that led to the private guest rooms. “We can use my room.”
We walked that way, and I unlocked the door before stepping inside. The reaper slipped in behind me and plopped down on the couch along the wall.
“Such a waste to use this room just for talking.” Taeden kicked his feet up on the table in front of him and eyed the bed in the corner. “That would be much more fun.”
Normally, Lust would’ve been chomping at the bit, totally down for fucking the reaper senseless. But tonight? He lay dormant, not saying a word.
“I have a mate.” I sat beside him but kept a cushion of space between us.
