“I don’t want that sweet shit,” Phoenix said. Shadows were in his eyes. “I want you to fuck me like you hate me.”

However, Lust sensed the exact opposite from him. Phoenix didn’t want hate sex. He wanted tenderness, to be treated like more than a random hole. Based on what he’d told me, his experience with sex had always been to manipulate or keep powerful males happy in order to give himself a sense of security.

That’s all he’d ever known—fucking rough with no actual intimacy.

And it broke my heart.

“No.” I hooked an arm around his waist and flipped him to his back. I eased back into him and placed my lips at his ear. “I’m going to make love to you.”

“I… I don’t…” He pushed against me with hardly any force, trembling. “I don’t want that.”

“Slow,”Lust whispered, reading Phoenix’s actual desires.“Take him slow.”

“Yes you do.” I cupped the back of his head and gently rocked into him. “You deserve to feel cared for, Nix.”

“Bellamy.” He pressed his face to my neck as another soft whimper left him.

I kissed one of his horns as his tail curled around my thigh. Our sweaty chests slid together, and our hearts beat in sync—both a bit fast.

This was different for me too. While I had taken lovers slow and gentle before, I had only been following their desires so Lust could feed off their pleasure. My heart hadn’t been in it. But as Phoenix and I moved together, bodies quaking with our impending orgasms, my heart was all in. My soul trembled from the force of our connection. I had bitten him earlier, placed my mark on his body and soul.

That same mark existed within me too, marking me as his.

“Bell,” he said on a moan, back arching as his fingertips dug into my hips. “Don’t stop.”

I felt his heightening pleasure. He was close. Shit, so was I. My hand slid between us so I could stroke his leaking cock. That’s what did him in. He shuddered beneath me, muscles tensing, and then he came with a breathy groan.

“Fuck,” I grunted, faltering in my rhythm before I came too.

His groans intensified as my cum worked its magic. His first orgasm hadn’t fully ended before the second one hit. It became so intense for him that he cried out, his voice cracking as he shattered beneath me. I held him through it, feeling a strange ache in my heart.

Maybe I was afraid of being happy too.

“Don’t move yet,” Phoenix murmured against my neck as the last of the tremors eased. He hugged me closer. “Let me… hold you…” His muscles relaxed as his breaths evened out.

Exhaustion had finally caught up to him. The double orgasm hadn’t helped matters any. Or, I suppose, ithadhelped. Because he’d needed to sleep. Still with that ache in my heart, I pushed my face into his auburn hair, breathing him in.

If he was right and we were two stars destined to burn out, I hoped it ended just like this—with him in my arms and our hearts beating as one.

Chapter Eleven

Phoenix

I woke just as the sun broke across the sky.

The view of the mountains through the floor-to-ceiling windows was mesmerizing. I watched the sunlight hit the peaks, awed by the sight. I had lived in darkness my whole life, with the exception of the times I’d journeyed to the mortal realm during the daytime. Light had never been a constant.

The pressure at my back shifted. Bellamy was spooning me, arm draped across my bare stomach and face at my neck. My tail rested on his leg.

“Morning,” he said in a sexy raspy voice. His breath feathered across my nape.

I rolled over to face him. Big mistake. If I thought his voice was hot in the morning, it was nothing compared to his looks. Blond hair fell into his heavy-lidded eyes, and the smile at the edge of his mouth could break a thousand hearts. That warm bourbon scent and muskiness of his skin had me pressing a little closer, my body hardening.

“Someone’s horny this morning,” Bellamy said, that smile growing bigger.

I nipped at his jaw. “That power of yours really is a pain in the ass.”

“Watch the horns.” He released a low laugh and gently pushed against them. “You’ll poke my eye out.”
