April hesitates. “Wait…didn’t you ask for his address yesterday?”
I don’t say anything, but I tip my head slightly, watching her. I knew she must have gotten my address somehow, but I wasn’t aware of the how.
“He, uh…wasn’t home.”
“Oh, okay,” April says. More commotion, some swearing, something crashing in the background. “Oh, for fuck’s sake. Holly, sorry, I gotta go. Don’t forget the Advil. Love you! See you soon!”
The line disconnects.
Silence settles between us, thick and unyielding.
“Thank you for that,” I say.
Holly shakes her head and shoves her phone away. “Don’t get used to it. I don’t like lying to my sister.”
“I don’t like lying to Parker either.”
“Too bad. Because you’re gonna keep doing it until after the wedding. I don’t want anything to ruin her day.”
“It’s his day too.”
She huffs out a laugh, dry and sharp. “Well, it’s not like he hasn’t done this before.”
I raise an eyebrow.
Her mouth opens, then closes. She exhales through her nose. “I didn’t mean it like that.” A beat passes. “Whatever. I need to go on my rounds —”
“Come over for dinner tonight.”
She blinks at me, like I just invited her to a child’s birthday party. “What?”
“Let me cook for you. As a thank you for fixing my hand.”
“I don’t have time for dinner.”
“Right. Of course not. You only have time for committing arson and drinking the blood of your enemies.”
“It’s rich in iron.”
“Noted. So, nine p.m. works fine for you?”
Her arms fold. “I have work to do.”
“Your shift ends in thirty minutes. So does mine.” I push off the shelf, stepping toward her. “Now, if you’re done making excuses, I’m going to finish up and leave. Have lots of dinner prep to do for a rather hard-to-impress guest.”
“And what if I say no? You gonna blackmail me again?”
“Something tells me I won’t need to.” I throw her a wink and walk out, calling back over my shoulder, “Don’t be late, love! And wear something nice!”
