A car honks on her end. “Come back soon so we can make up for the drinking you’re about to do without me.”

I smile, shaking my head. “Talk later?”

“Yup. Bye. Love you.”

I hang up.

“Who was that?” April asks.

“Just a friend from work.”

She hums, unconvinced. “How’s your speech coming along, by the way? Do you need any help with it?”

“Last I checked the speech foryourrehearsal dinner is supposed to be a surprise.”

She wipes the corner of her lips with her pinkie, eyes still on the mirror. “Its contents, yes. Its existence, not really.”

“It exists.” It does. I woke up early and spent all morning working on it. I hope it makes everyone cry.

“I’m hoping it’s not rude or mean in any way?”

“Well, I do call Parker a half-wit waste of space in the first two lines.”

She shoots me another look through the mirror.

“I’m joking.” It’s in the last two lines.

April finally leaves her hair alone and strides over to me to fidget with mine.

I smack her hand away. “Stop it.”

“Let me fix it. It looks unruly.”

I cross my arms as she clips a few strands to the side with a silver butterfly clip.

“So…?” she muses, tilting her head.

I frown. “What?”

April’s fingers pause briefly before she smooths down a stray piece of my hair. “Speaking of friends from work, what’s going on between you and Theo?”

I swear I choke on my own spit. “What?” My voice comes out strangled. “I mean, nothing’s going on. Why on earth would you ask me that?”Nice one, Holly. That was so smooth.

“You called me late at night and asked for his address. I’m assuming that wasn’t to make a pizza delivery to his place.”

“No, it was actually to deliver drugs to his place. I sell hardcore drugs on the side, by the way.”

“If you like him, just say so. I won’t judge you.”

Excuse me? “Why would you judge me?”

“Aha, so you do like him then. Interesting.”

“What? No, I —”

“You don’t have to explain yourself to me, Hol. I said I won’t judge.”

“Fine, you got me. I do like him.”
