Merrick spares me the quickest of glances. I’m totally getting thrown out to sea here, aren’t I?
“He’s been sufficiently punished, Father. I promise he won’t be any more trouble.”
Did Merrick stand up to the terrifying angel-demon for me? Gods that’s hot.
This time, I know the slap is coming, but his palm never lands. Kneeling man is up so fast I barely register that he’s moved, and he has the scary angel’s wrist in his palm.
“That’s enough brutality to my son’s handsome face,” he says.
“Dad,” Merrick complains. “I can take it.”
“You’re going to pay for that,” Daniel seethes. “You can take both their punishments.”
“Fine. I’m sure I like pain a lot more than they do.” The man turns away from the large seraph, lifting a brow in time with a cocky smile that’s borderline flirtatious. “Sorry about him, he likes to eat children on Halloween too.”
Halloween is a human thing, but this man looks far from human. Even the way his light-brown hair sticks up and moves like a waving flame would tell anyone with eyes that he’s some kind of creature. Plus, humans don’t move that quickly.
Merrick’s dad ruffles his hair. “Missed you, son.”
“Dad. You’re embarrassing me,” Merrick hisses.
“See? This is why I’m hard on him. He thinks he can talk to you that way,” Daniel says.
“Nah. I am embarrassing him. It’s my right. I’m Erick,” he says. “I’d shake your hand, but if I touch you, my mate will kill you. May I take over, Master?”
“You already have,” Daniel grumbles. He gestures toward me. “Please, continue.”
Gods, they’re weird. Oddly domestic. In any case, it’s time to turn on the ol’ Treyu charm.
I salute Erick. “No need to shake my hand, sir. I’m Treyu Centaurus nee Orion. You both probably already know that, but my dad says it’s polite to formally introduce yourself anyway.”
“Look, Master. See how charming he is? Reminds me of someone,” Erick says, tapping his chin. “I’m the general’s major. You’ll be working with me mostly.”
“Looking forward to it, sir.” If I’m stuck here, having a weapon in my hand is the way to go.
“He’s not going to the Garrison until he proves he can be tamed,” Seraph Daniel says.
“Understood, Father,” Merrick says.
My angel—um, formerly my angel—makes a lot more sense after seeing him with his parents. He’s got Daddy issues galore.
“But you approve of us now?” That’s Merrick again. He sounds so fucking hopeful.
“Approve of him, how?”
“I’d like to take him as my mate.”
Goddess, Merrick. He’s not gonna let that go, is he? A heads up that this was about that would have been nice too. Plus, last I checked, not an angel. Angels can’t mate with us commonfolk stars.
“Mate? No. I believe I said pet. You can still fuck a pet,” Daniel says.
To think I was holding off on my judgment of this guy. I officially knight him dick.
Merrick’s hands clench. “I made archangel, Father. I was under the impression that I was allowed to choose a mate.”
“You are, but of course, a decision like that pends my approval. I’m saying choose another.”
“But—”
