“No. I should. It would serve him right.”

Strong fingers wrap a bruising grip around my ankle, yanking me from my cozy blanket nest, and pinning me nose to nose with his handsome face. His dark eyes flash through the bruising that’s spread like tie-dye over his face.

“Get the fuck out of bed, Treyu.”

Our lips are close. Only a breath away. My lungs rise and fall carefully so that I don’t move the minuscule amount it would take to light the fires between us.

“Yeah. Yeah, fine.”

I roll away from him, shielding my raging hard-on.Please don’t see it. Please don’t see it.

“I can smell arousal, Treyu. You know that.”

“I was choosing to forget that fun fact. Okay, I’ll admit that if I hadn’t made my promise, I’d be boning with you right now. What matters is that I’m keeping my promise.”

“We wouldn’t have time anyway. Hurry up.”

“Why are you rushing me?”

“My father’s going to be there. We can’t be late.”

“What the actual fuck? Your father is a dick. Can’t, I dunno, your dad handle it?”

“It doesn’t work like that. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

“Not comforting.” It’s time for me to storm around the room, pretending to look for my clothes when what I’m really doing is stalling. It’s not just psychotic angel Daniel I’m worried about, I’m about to set eyes on Zhang, and in true Treyu style, I’m nervous for no good reason. It’s not like he’ll have forgotten we’re married and stuff.

“Wait,” Merrick says once I’ve retied the sturdy laces of my boots for the third time. “I have something for you.”

He disappears into the closet and returns with a heavy silver jacket that’s a lot like his. Armored. Sleek. Merrick holds it out for me until I slide my arms in.

“Perfect fit,” he says.

And it is. Right down to the wrist length.

“I had this made for you as soon as I found out about your?—”

“Angel disease?”

His eyes flick to the deities for mercy. “Becoming an angel is special.”

“When it’s a choice.”

“It wasn’t a choice for me.”

“Touchè. Still. Jacket’s nice, though.”

“It looks good on you.”

The mirror across the room says so too. Even with its weight, it moves in time with me. I’ve seen angels in action. They dance when they fight, using their armored jacket to deflect what’s being pelted at them. It’s pretty fucking cool to have one.

“I’d better be getting a kick-ass angel sword too.”

He smiles. “You will.”

I take a deep breath. “Alright, Mair. Lead the way.”
