“Fuck!” I yank my hand away.

Luella shakes her head. Her eyes widen. She flinches. “Oh, Treyu, dear. Didn’t see you there. But I’m glad to see you under better circumstances.”

W-What?

A cold tremor freezes my insides. “But we just … don’t you remember what we—gah!”

“Are you alright, dear?”

“F-Fine, Madame Luella, but I just remembered that my husband wants me. Would you mind if we caught up another time?”

She nods. “Good man. I’ll make sure to tell the Guild how devoted you are to your husband.”

“Yeah. Th-Thanks, ma’am.”

That’s enough fresh air for me tonight. I race back to my men as if I’m running from another seraph.

CHAPTERTHIRTY

Treyu

My heart pounds in my throat as I race across the palace and barrel through the door of our room, shutting it behind me, resting against it as I slow my heaving chest.

Merrick and Zhang are … they’re kissing? It’s short-lived. They pull away from each other, not seeming to notice that I’ve entered the room, wiping their mouths with the back of their arms, faces scrunched in disgust.

“Okay, what the fuck is going on tonight?” I shrill.

“Blech, that was terrible. Treyu, come kiss the Zhang off me,” Merrick says.

“No way, he’s kissing me first.”

“I’m not kissing anyone. My dick’s finally found what turns it straight off—creepy old ladies.”

Though, now that I think about it, them kissing was hot. But still, what the fuck?

“This mistake,” Merrick, who looks a ton better, begins, gesturing between them, “followed a truce we just made.”

I cross my arms. “You kissed on it?”

“No, we wanted to see if we had any chemistry. We don’t, but where we meshed was handling you,” Merrick says.

“Handle me? I don’t need handling,” I say.

“Yes, you do,” Zhang says. Merrick nods his agreement. Zhang holds up his forearm, displaying his wedding rune. “This says I already have the authority to handle you as your head of house. As you’ll recall, I’m allowed to add members at will.”

True. And they were going to boss me around anyway, but still, I’m not going to admit anything. Especially that I like it.

“Whatever, we don’t have time for this right now. Something creepy just happened and if you both insist on handling me, do something to fucking calm me down.”

They exchange a look. I’m a much different Treyu than the one who left here. No, I haven’t forgotten about our argument, but we’ll have to deal with our relationship drama later.

“Get your ass over here, babe,” Zhang says.

I rip Merrick’s boots off my feet and let Zhang’s jacket fall off me before I hop between the middle of them. They each take a side of me, wrapping their legs around mine. I could get used to this. “Tell us what happened,” Zhang demands.

With chattering teeth, I tell them every detail. Zhang glows and rubs my arms. They warm me up.

“You don’t think the ‘Timothy is a spy’ theory is too farfetched?” Zhang asks.
