I let her get away, and she turns for the main entrance. She probably thinks she can make it outside, but what she doesn’t know is that Kain is positioned there, waiting.

I follow her, taking my time. This isn’t only about catching her; it’s about the chase. She wants the fear.

“Run faster, beautiful,”I call out.

She’s at the main doors now, rattling the handles.

“Doors are locked.”Kain’s voice echoes from near the entrance.

Skye changes direction, heading deeper into the library instead of toward us. It’s exactly what we want. She races up the stairs to the second floor two at a time as Kain and I follow behind her.

I move faster now, my boots making noise on the marble floor. I want her to hear me coming.

“The second floor won’t save you,”I taunt her.“Have you never watched a scary movie?”

The second floor is darker, more mazelike, with narrow corridors between the shelves. I can hear her hurrying away somewhere ahead, and I pause at the top of the stairs to listen.

“Marco,”I call out, not expecting a reply.

A book falls in an aisle to my left. I round a corner and catch a glimpse of her, ducking between the shelves.“Found you.”

She gasps and takes off running again, but as she reaches the far side of the floor, she realizes her mistake—it’s a dead end. Nothing but a wall of windows looking out onto the quad below. And when she turns, I’m there, blocking her path.

But just as I’m about to close in, movement in my periphery catches my eye.

Silas emerges from the shadows to her left, so I stop and let him take the lead. She is his obsession. I’m here to make sure this doesn’t go sideways, more so with Kain than Silas.

He doesn’t speak at first, just watches her, with his head tilted like he’s studying every expression that crosses her face. His gaze drops to her throat, and even through the mask, I can tell he notices something.

“Hello, Skye,”he finally says.“Did you really think you could run from me?”

She presses back against the window, trapped between us and the glass.

“I’ve been watching you,”Silas continues, taking another slow step closer.“Where are your pearls?”

“My mother.” The words come out bitter. “She wants to control me.”

Silas has always been obsessed with the details, and she shivers at his words.

Silas reaches out, not quite touching her face.“You’re beautiful without them.”

Her eyes widen, and I realize why when Kain stalks past me and pushes Silas out of the way. He picks her up and throws her over his shoulder.

“Enough fucking around. I’ll show her what happens to little obsessions.”

She squeals as Kain stomps toward a closed door, lifts a boot, and kicks the door, buckling it off its hinges. Shit, that’s going to cost me. The space beyond looks like an old filing room; stacks of paper line the desk in the center, and the only other things inside are filing cabinets. He swipes his free arm across the desk, and papers fall to the floor, then he deposits her onto the wooden surface.

He pulls off her Air Force Ones and grabs the bottom of her sweats, yanking them down her legs. It leaves her with nothing but a tiny black thong covering her bottom half.

“Touch yourself. Show us how desperate you are,”Kain demands.

She hesitates, her hand trembling, and I can’t help the grin on my lips.“Go on, pretty thing,”I encourage, leaning against the filing cabinets as if I’ve got all the time in the world.“You get off on us watching you.”

Her hand moves to her stomach, and she slides it down to her thong before moving it aside.

Silas steps closer.“Perfect.”

His hands clench at his sides—the restraint it is taking him not to touch her is almost painful to watch. He’s been surveilling her for too long, obsessing over what it would be like to have her, but now that he does, he can’t seem to make the move.
