After thirty-one years, the lost girls were brought into the light. Uncertainty became what it should have been three decades ago: grief. But, for me, there was no grief. Only a sense that I’d done right by Patty, like she had me.

Grant handed me a soda. “You okay?”

Was I? I stared at the remains, dark and discolored, stripped of flesh. I wanted Susan to see them. Her silence had condemned them and their families to the cold, wet darkness for decades. But Susan or Bailey standing here wouldn’t change anything.

“I’m okay.”

“Let’s get out of here.”

“I don’t want to leave them.”

“They are in good hands now.” His strong hand wrapped around my chilled fingers. I didn’t pull or tug away. I liked Grant. And I thought liking must be the first step to something more. I hoped. I smiled up at him. “Okay.”
