He groans and then lets out a snore so loud we all laugh.
“You two need a comedy show,” Loki says after she recovers.
“Help me move him to the couch?” I ask Corvin.
“Babe, it’s broken. Besides, he needs to stay on the ground so when he pukes, he can lie in it until morning. Then he’s fixing that.” He points at my office.
“Right. I’m going home.” I’ve had enough of today.
I grab my shit, and Loki follows me home after we say goodbye and lock up the funeral home. Corvin lives upstairs, which is why he’s always there. It’s easier with me working and going to school at the moment.
I’m so lost in my head that I don’t notice the red and blue lights flashing on my street are from police cars at my own fucking house. I turn suddenly down a side street, not wanting to explain why I’m wearing my cousin’s cut and riding her bike to people I work with.
“Follow me,” Loki calls to me, and I nod.
Ten minutes later, we’re parked outside a small bungalow tucked back in the woods with a blind driveway. I take my helmet off and look around.
“Where are we?”
Chapter Twelve
LOKI
“My place.” I try to keep my personal feelings out of my tone.
I hate this house with a passion. It’s full of bad memories, trauma, and a lifetime of regrets, but it was the closest place I could think of to regroup.
“Looks abandoned.”
I roll my eyes at her statement.
She’s fishing, but I ain’t taking the bait.
“Another time, Prez. Why is your house crawling with cops?” She raises her eyebrow at me.
I know she caught the difference in my descriptors.
Place vs house.
This place was never a home.
“Well, we need to find out. Call Corvin. You need your bike and a change of clothes.”
She nods and calls her best friend.
“WHAT?” She yells out, and I cringe when a neighbor’s dog starts barking in the distance.
“Speaker,” I hiss so I can hear what the fuck is going on.
“Your house was broken into. Diesel went to Mrs. Duncan’s house early this afternoon. She didn’t think anything of it since she offered to doggie sit. But when you didn’t come home, she called here. I asked how he got outta the house, and well, she called the cops when she found the door open. They’ve been here looking for you, but I didn’t know what to say, so as of now, you’re a missing person presumed kidnapped.” Oh, oh, that’s fucking fabulous.
“So you can’t go home.” I sigh and start to pace.
We do not need any of these complications.
“Ok, everyone, relax. It’s just a misunderstanding. I can call into the station and clear this up.” The look I give her shuts her up instantly.
“Ok, I need you bitches to remember I can’t see what’s going on, so why did we go quiet?” Corvin’s irritated voice makes me grin.
