“Don’t…you have pregnant patients?”
I blinked in response. “Pregnant patients in the asylum…sure. But Gigi, their babies are the least of their concern. Mostof them are trying to eat their baby or yank it out with their fingertips?—”
“Does that actually work?” Jinx butted in.
I couldn’t help but facepalm. “No moron. You need an instrument even to reach the cervix, and besides that, it’s early in the second trimester. Patients wouldn’t know they were pregnant even if they grasped the concept until they were showing.”
“So someone like Gigi can’t just be unpregnant?”
I didn’t know how to answer that. The question was worded strangely. “No…Gianna would need to give birth or have an abortion to be…‘unpregnant.’”
Gianna looked at her belly and protectively held her stomach.
“Not. Happening,” she said.
Her voice was cold, unlike anything I had ever heard from her. She always had such bright, cheery light oozing from every part of her, and the coldness in her stance and voice just didn’t match.
“Gianna. Please. You need to go to the hospital…or it may not be an option about losing your baby.”
She paled, and I knew my words finally hit home for her.
“Fine, Mare. Take me to the asylum.”
Both Jinx and I stared at her, our confusion plastered on our faces as sure as a sticker.
“Uhh…Gianna.”
“No, Mara. You want me in a medical facility? Fine. I will go, but only if it’s where you are.”
This weird notion of staying close to me was not like Gianna. I really needed to get to the bottom of what the fuck was wrong with her, and find the real story of how she fell.
At least if I took her to one of the assessment rooms we used for assessments, I would have the medical equipment needed to stitch her head, check on her baby, and get some fluids into her.
“Fine, Gigi. You win. But Jinx can’t be there with you. I am sorry. It’s restricted access for patients only. I need to keep this hidden from my boss, or I will lose my damn job.”
Gianna sighed in relief.
“Thank you, Mare.”
Jinx was less than enthused, but I didn’t give a shit. The truth was that Jinx could be in the room. Sneaking one person in versus two didn’t make a difference. But I didn’t want him distracting me while I worked on patching up my sister.
I needed some fucking distance from him. I was going to stitch up my sister and kick her and her rugrat out of my one sanctuary.
“I don’t fucking think so, Nirvana. Where Gianna goes, I go.”
“See, that is where you are wrong. You are not coming, and if you try, the security at my job will shove an electric taser up your ass until you taste your own tongue.”
Jinx mocked me by shivering. “I wonder what it tastes like, Mara.”
My body shuddered.
“And besides, Nirvana, maybe I like a little ass play. They can certainly try before I kill them.”
Something about the way he said that, so matter-of-fact and cold, made me think he may have meant it. I thought better of insulting him with my instant commentary and instead rolled my eyes.
“I will sneak her phone into her room. She will be able to call you if she wants.”
He didn’t agree, so he growled like a demon and stormed out of the room.
