Honestly, though, five husbands? I’m not judging, not in the slightest. It’s just… I thought I was a little out there with my two husbands. Granted, they’re twins, so maybe that amps up the taboo factor a touch? But I’m pretty sure I caught that Asher and Ronan are nephew and uncle, so I don’t really know. All I can say is Skyla definitely has her hands full. The house full of kids and one more on the way is a clear indication of that.
Again, not judging. Just… observing.
Eventually, Skyla and I slipped away to watch the kids play in the playroom. I was getting anxious not having my eyes on the boys, and I think she could tell. She’s younger than me by at least tenyears, but she has this calm presence about her, so you wouldn’t know it.
“So you guys are from Seattle?” Skyla asks as she sits down and looks to me.
Slowly, I take a seat too, glancing over one more time to see Aries and Ryder playing tag with Seraphina, narrowly missing stomping on the littlest one each time.
“Careful!” I hiss to them before turning to her. “Yeah, Seattle. You?”
“Salem, Massachusetts. My husbands grew up there, but I actually grew up in London.”
“London? Shit, that’s really cool.”
She smiles softly and nods. “It is. My aunt still lives there, and we try to visit at least once a year.”
I nod before my gaze drifts to a blank wall and more thoughts than I’m able to control envelop me.
“Hey,” she says, snapping me out of my daze. “Are you okay?”
“Me? Yeah, I’m fine. I’ve dealt with worse, trust me,” I say, shrugging her off.
She nods in understanding before tilting her head to the side. “I’m sure you have. You seem like a strong woman, but… you were attacked in a home that was designed to be safe. Your children were attacked. It would be understandable if you were a little… shaken.”
I look to her hesitantly. What’s her angle? Why is she being so nice to me? Is this part of their plan? Are they looking for some kind of information? Something they can use against the guys? Against us? I?—
“I’m sorry,” she says with a shake of her head. “I’m prying. I tend to do that. We don’t have to talk about it. I just… I’m sorry you went through that. That your boys did. You’ll all be safe here.”
I give her a tight smile and nod, appreciating the sentiment but desperately wanting to evade this topic.
“So,” she begins again, like she doesn’t have it in her to simply sit in silence. “Twin brothers?”
She’s smirking at me with intrigue, and I can’t help the laugh that bubbles out of me as I nod.
“If you’re wondering how great it is… it’s better.”
She laughs at that. “I can only imagine. I don’t think I’ve ever met another poly couple before.”
“We’re not really poly; we’re just… us.”
Skyla smiles at that, nodding softly. “I get that. I’m not sure I’d call us poly either. We’re just… in love,” she says simply.
I nod and give her a small smile. “How do the kids do with five dads?”
She shrugs. “I’m sure the same that your boys do with two. They don’t know what it’s like not to have five dads constantly worrying over them, ready to play, to hold them. To be honest, they’re all downright spoiled with attention.”
“I was playing with her first!” Ryder snaps.
“Too bad. She’s having more fun with me!” Aries throws back.
Skyla and I share a look before busting up laughing.
“It looks like your daughter won’t lose any attention while we’re here,” I say.
“Oh no, look at her—she’s absolutely eating it up,” she replies, pointing to her daughter, who’s standing between my boys like she’s queen of the world.
You go, little queen.
