Johnny
Just as I predicted, the guys showed up at nearly three just as the snow started to fall. “Holy shit, look at this,” Jeremy said when he got out of the van and twirled around holding his hands out.
“Hey, you made it,” Devon said and jogged over to them as Mateo stretched.
“Of course we made it. We always make it,” Mateo said and they hugged before clapping each other on the back. “This place is nice. A little out of the way but nice.”
“We love it here,” I said, and hugged Jeremy. “It’s good to see you both.”
“Same, we’ve been working like dogs for my parents. They really took advantage of the free labor,” he said.
“Hey, a little work is good for you,” I said and patted him on the back.
“It’s good for you, not so much for me,” Mateo said. “Hey, help us carry this shit in. We got all the groceries you told us to and added a few other things because I can actually cook too. And we brought our guitars in case we all wanted to sing around the campfire or something like that.”
“Oh, we’ve been doing that every night. It’s a tradition at this point,” Devon said making Jeremy laugh.
“I told you. As soon as they were away from us, they got all corny,” Mateo said to Jeremy.
“Hey, they’re in love. Nothing wrong with love, man,” Jeremy said and ruffled Mateo’s head as he walked by carrying a few bags he’d gotten out of the van.
“Feel free to help me carry this shit in,” Mateo said as he walked up to the front door of the cabin.
I picked up his guitar and jogged over to open the door. “Hey this is nice,” he said as soon as he walked in. “Where do you want this?”
“Here, let me take that. I’ll put it away.” We’d gotten into a routine with the groceries so now we both knew where everything was and how much we had. One of many things I never thought much about. “There are two bedrooms down the hall. Take your choice. We’re in the master.”
He walked down the hall just as Jeremy and Devon walked in. “We’ll take the first one,” Mateo said.
“No need to share, the other one is the same size,” I said.
“We’re fine in the one,” Jeremy said without meeting anyone’s eyes.
“Guys, Jeremy and me we’ve been kinda—”
“Kinda hooking up, or kinda in love?” I asked before grinning at both of them.
“We’re still figuring that out. At first it was just fucking, but now—”
“Now it’s not,” Jeremy said.
“Good to know,” Devon said and couldn’t stop his eyes from widening at their confession. “I mean, we kinda suspected.”
“I suspected, you said you didn’t know,” I said, throwing him under the bus.
“Well, I didn’t,” Devon admitted. “But I’m happy for you guys.”
“Look outside,” Jeremy said.
“Oh, it’s really coming down. You guys really did get here at the right time,” I said. “Maybe we can try the hot tub later in the snow.”
“Did you guys do that?” he asked and looked at where it was all covered up.
“Not during the snow. It only snowed the one day and we were comfortable inside,” I said and thought back on all the great memories we’d made in only one week. “We used it nearly every night though.”
“I thought that was a seventies thing,” Mateo said. “I remember my uncle had one.”
“Whatever. You won’t complain when you’re using it,” I said and walked into the kitchen. “Are you guys hungry?”
