Kris

Later in the evening, Mathias returned to my rooms.

He walked around admiring all my new stuff. I didn’t want him here, but at the same time I longed for contact. News. Anything but these closing-in walls.

“Any word about Father?”

Mathias shrugged as if it didn’t matter. I hadn’t known him to be this way. But then again, maybe I simply hadn’t noticed until now. He was the most outspoken litter-mate of the three of us. The most daring and bold. But was the strongest. I got the best test marks from our tutors.

“He’ll be home in a couple of days. You really whacked him good,” Mathias said.

I did not reply. I already felt terrible enough. I loved Father. I had never wanted to hurt him.

“Where’s Trigg?” I asked.

“Oh, there’s news on that front. I guess all that happened this morning was too much. He went into the Burn. Accommodations were made for him at Zilly’s. Only the best for us, you know. Father’s orders.”

“Fuck you, Mathias, you could have led with that. That’s huge news. I hope he’s okay.”

“He’ll be fine. They take care of Alphas real good over there. But you’ll never know that now.”

“Could you just leave?”

Mathias acted as if he didn’t hear me. “I think maybe being around you ignited it in him. Father, too. You aren’t really an Omega. You’re different. Like a Sylph or something, although we all know you aren’t that since the three of us shared a womb.”

“No, I’m not a Sylph. And I didn’t do anything to ignite Father’s or Trigg’s Burn.”

“Well, you’re igniting me now, you smell so good.”

“Am not. And just shut up!”

Mathias sauntered over to me. “You can’t talk to me like that anymore! I’m in charge. And you have nothing. Nothing. Do you hear? All this,” he waved his arms. “It’s not really yours. Father owns it. It’s on loan to you until he figures out what to do with you. It’s only because you’re still his son you get this kind of treatment.”

“I’ve done nothing wrong. You should have some feelings for me still, and what I’m going through.”

“But Kris, you aren’t who we all thought you were. You’re a fraud. How do you think that makes all of us feel?”

“Mathias, just get out. Get the fuck out!”

“I don’t have to.”

I walked up to him and shoved him. “I can still beat you and you know it!”

For the first time since walking into my rooms as if he owned them, his eyes widened. Even if he failed at having empathy for me, he did have some capacity to feel apprehension. Maybe even fear.

“You’ll regret this. You can’t treat me this way.” But even though his words came out threatening, he backed away.

He became braver as he crossed the threshold, turning. “One day I’ll have my dick all the way up your ass. You won’t be saying anything then, will you?”

My teeth gritted. “Never gonna happen!”

The door slammed. I heard the lock click into place.

My brother had never talked that way to me in the past. One tiny thing had become revealed about my nature, and now he despised me? This was insane!

I’d always been the natural leader of the three of us. Trigg was the sweet one. Mathias the rudest. But never too rude at our expense.

But now all the power dynamics had changed. Mathias had been through his first Burn. The cocky personality we often thought was cute had turned to full-on assholery.
