I brought the subject up one more time.

“I’m not fully Alpha. I’m not fully Omega. I’m not a Sylph. There is no word for my kind.”

Thorne raised an eyebrow.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about it. Reading.”

Gently, Thorne said, “I can understand why. Your identity--”

I interrupted. “No. That’s not why. I don’t care about that stuff. I’m still me deep inside. Father locking me away didn’t change who I am, just how I perceive the world now.”

“Wise before your time?” he asked with a sweet smile.

I shrugged. “I have another reason and you know what it is.”

He frowned.

“Please don’t get mad and walk away. I want to talk about us. About the mate-bond.”

“I know you do. But another time. We have time.”

“No. Now. Do you not even want to try with me?”

He took in a slow, deep breath. “It has nothing to do with you…” He trailed off.

“How can you say that? It has everything to do with me. It has to do with me wanting more.”

I stopped, letting the words soak into the air around us.

Thorne said nothing.

“I know what you’re thinking. You said it a million times. You won’t let anyone near you during the Burn. I understand that. Also, maybe we’re incompatible to that bond. But what if we’re not? What if we could try? Just once. I mean we could put some safety features in place first.”

Thorne stood abruptly.

“You walk away every time I bring it up.”

“It’s impossible right now.”

“Why?”

No answer.

“I can’t talk to you?” I took a couple of fast breaths. “I know you’re not rejecting me. I feel your acceptance of me every night we make love. But you have to talk to me about this.”

Still no response as Thorne went into the kitchen.

I got up and followed him.

“I want it and if you weren’t labeled dangerous, if you didn’t suffer blackouts, I know you would admit you want it, too! You didn’t make the legal claim on me in front of my family for no reason!”

Thorne stood a few feet away from me, shoulders pushed up tight, his entire body taut. The kitchen light made white lines in his glossy hair.

I went to him. Facing his back, I put my arms around his waist and held him to my chest. I pressed my cheek to his left shoulder and hugged him tight.

After a few seconds, I felt his hands cover mine at his belly.

Finally, he turned and cupped my face in his palms. “I want the mate bond with you more than anything. You are very dear. I love you so much.”
