No nurse would be checking in on me at this time of night unless I was screaming bloody murder.

The door opened.

I blinked at the faint gold light coming in through the door and there he was. Impossible. Wrong. Forbidden.

My king?

My Geo had returned to me!

I sat up in my bed.

“Good. You’re awake,” he whispered.

“What?”

“Shh!”

Geo came into the room and I pulled the sheet with me as I scrambled toward the head of my bed. “No! You can’t be here!”

The drifting scent of him, all leather-sweet and spice. It hadn’t been my imagination at all. I’d smelled him coming probably from the moment he’d entered the castle.

“I am here,” he whispered. “And we don’t have long.”

“Long? Long for what?”

“Just in case, put these on.” He held up a pair of cuffs, glinting and glowing in the dim light. I could see he had on no gloves.

I looked up at him. “What are you doing?”

He looked at me for a long moment before replying. “You’re being moved.”

“I am?”

He nodded. “Come on. Get up. Get dressed.”

I started to push back the sheet before I remembered Doctor Prim’s words. I couldn’t see Geo anymore, the doctor had said. It would hurt us both. If he asked me to do anything out of routine, I should decline him.

“If I really am being moved, the nurses and guards can take care of that,” I said.

He took a step forward and my skin tingled. My cock hardened tight against my belly. “No, don’t come any further.”

He frowned. “What? Misha, it’s only me. Why are you afraid?”

“I just can’t go with you. If you’re asking me, then I say no. Send a nurse.” I brought the edge of my sheet up to my face and hid behind it, peering out over the top.

He looked so good standing there, like a hero come to take me away. Like a real king. But it was wrong. Doctor Prim told me. He’d been stern. I could feel that he’d been scared, too.

No, something was off. Something was bad. I didn’t care about myself. I cared that Geo might be hurt.

“Geo, you have to go away.” My voice came out all shuddery and weak. I had to be strong. But I wasn’t. Not with Geo. I sucked in a deep breath.

He lowered his eyes and turned his head as if to look over his shoulder. There was a guard out there somewhere and I could smell that Geo was afraid.

“I don’t have time to explain, Misha. But come with me now, and I’ll tell you everything.”

“I can smell it in the air. You’re lying. You’re doing something wrong. It’s too dangerous. Geo, you have to go.” My lips trembled as I spoke those words.

Geo said something that sounded like a curse under his breath. He never cursed that I had ever heard. He rapidly took three steps forward to the side of my bed.
