“What details?” My heart pounded. My skin couldn’t decide if the air in the room was too hot or too cold.
“Blood tests.”
“And? What does that have to do with me?” I picked up my mug of coffee, realizing as it sloshed against the sides it was cold.
“I took it upon myself to run extra tests.”
I bit the inside of my lower lip until I tasted salt. “You took it upon yourself?”
“Yes, sir.”
The air between us nearly crackled. I did not take my gaze from his. I couldn’t. The Alpha in me had reared up and it was pissed. All my defenses were up.
“Why would you do that?”
“Because I suspected.”
I could have killed him where he sat. But I had expected no less from him. It was why my plans had been made in haste. I sat in forced calm and asked, keeping my voice low. “Suspected what?”
“The blood of the Sylph shows positive for a bond. Three point nine, in fact.”
Time stopped.
“You fucked him,” Prim said. I had never heard a crass word come out of his mouth until today.
“Of course I didn’t!”
He continued as though he hadn’t heard me. “It’s taboo. It’s against the law.”
“I didn’t do anything with him except befriend him!”
“You are lying and I understand why. Sylphs are irresistible to the unbonded. Tory didn’t report his divorce. He felt it and the result was cataclysmic. You are unqualified for this job. You should not be chief of staff. You should never have been hired.”
“I’m not lying! I never touched him in that way.”
Prim’s eyes squinted. “Why do you keep denying it? I have the blood tests. There is a bond. You lied to me about having an Omega partner where a bond was beginning. You lied about the effect Misha had on you when it should have been reported to me or another doctor at this facility right away.”
“I didn’t fuck him!” My voice came out in a yell.
Prim crossed his arms. “I must report this.”
I looked down at my desk, finally breaking eye contact. I thought about my plans to move. Luckily, many of them were already in motion, but I needed more time.
“You seem like a good person. A smart person. I like you. This isn’t personal. I am required by law to report any suspected breach by the staff. Especially impropriety with a patient. It’s against the law!”
I met his eyes again. “I asked you the other day about breaking bonds. This was why. You don’t have to believe me, but I never intended it. There was skin to skin contact between us, yes. But never sex. Never! I cared about him. But I never allowed it beyond that.”
His eyebrows narrowed. “That’s not possible. You are lying.”
“I’m not. Don’t you think I know it’s impossible? That’s why I was asking you all those questions and had you test my blood twice! I felt it happening but knew it to be impossible. If I were hiding something, I would never have come to you.”
“A bond is created with knotting,” the doctor began.
“With an Omega, it is, yes. I know that! But Misha’s a Sylph. They’re not Omegas. I didn’t compromise myself! I certainly didn’t knot him!” I gulped air, fuming.
Prim’s lips flattened. He tilted his head. “If what you say is true, then—how?”
“I don’t know! He fainted once when I visited him. I myself supervised him being taken to the baths. It was instinct. To help him regain his senses.”
