Tears welled in my eyes. “You’ll get caught. If you’re doing what I think you’re doing, you’ll get caught and then you’ll be hurt and I can’t think about that. I can’t!”
“Shhh.” He stood on the threshold of the elevator and put his hand on the side of my head, fingers combing through my curls. “I’ve been planning this for almost two weeks,” he said.
Two weeks?“I—I don’t understand.”
“Misha, you have to trust me.”
He was my king. And an Alpha. If I couldn’t trust him, then who could I trust? I thought about Doctor Prim and his warnings. But did I trust Prim? I didn’t even know the man.
I wanted to go with Geo. I wanted it with all my heart. But if it led to something bad, I couldn’t take it.
“I do trust you, but--”
“Come with me.”
I stepped into the elevator with him and held my breath all the way down. When the doors opened I hesitated again.
What about the guards by the front? What if they saw us?” I was trembling now.
“Misha.”
I looked up, realizing I’d stopped moving. Eyes wide, I stepped into the corridor and glanced toward the front of the building. There was low lighting, lots of shadows and no guards.
I looked at Geo.
“How?”
“Don’t ask questions. Just do as I say.”
The hospital on the first floor where most of the night staff worked was located around the corner and down another hall, far enough away from Geo’s office to not be seen.
In my bare feet and jumpsuit, cuffed and with Geo’s hand on my elbow, we walked through the double glass front doors and to the outside of the castle.
Trumpet vines grew on lattices along the walls, and yellow forsythia bloomed against the long porch wall. I could smell the freshness of the night air on the dewy grass.
“Come,” Geo said softly.
He led me down the front path to a parking lot and a car. Quickly, he opened the front passenger door and pushed me inside.
I had never been in a car before. I’d seen them. I’d watched them on videos. But now I was in one, and it was going to roll away with me inside and Geo driving.
My hands shook. I felt like I’d lost all feeling in my body. This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening.
Geo ran around to the other side of the car and got in, starting it up. It rumbled to life. A faint vibration passed through my seat and on the floor under my bare feet.
“Ohhh,” I breathed.
“Okay?” he asked.
“No.” I swallowed hard.
“It’s all right, Misha. I’m a good driver.”
“I am sure you are.” I turned to look at him. “So, you’re taking me away, then? Just like that?”
He said nothing, pulling out of the parking space. I wasn’t prepared and my head slammed back on the soft head-rest.
“Geo, you can’t do this.”
