He was right, of course, it shouldn’t have mattered. But I was feeling self-conscious. And stupid. This didn’t have to be happening. I was the idiot who’d been too proud to give him his way and insisted he come by. I’d made the appointment, set the time.

Mathias. The Alpha son of Varian Vandergale. Big. Dark. Hair shining and perfect in a neat braid. Cuff links gleaming in the sunlight as he swung his hands forward, jacket sleeves riding up, and took his first step into my home.

I heard the tiny patter of footsteps behind me.

“Hey, I know you.” The high pitched voice of Tybor spoke from behind my blue jeans clad legs. “Hi, bank guy.”

Mathias looked down at him as Tybor came out from behind me. He towered over him—well, technically he towered over us all.

“You’re the one who likes orange,” Mathias said.

Tybor glanced up at me with wide eyes. “He members.”

Luke came to stand beside Tybor. He had always been the quieter twin, shier, despite being the Alpha. He said nothing.

Mathias took two more steps inside, his hand going into his pocket. He pulled something out, then bent slightly at the waist and held out his hand. On it were two orange-wrapped candies.

“For us?” Tybor asked.

“Hmm, well, is there anyone else here who likes orange?” Mathias asked. He was so nonchalant about it all, so matter of fact. This rich man, this Vandergale.

What the hell was he doing here? What the hell was I thinking having made this appointment?

“Just me,” Tybor answered excitedly.

“And me,” said Luke softly.

“Well, then, I suppose they will go to waste if you don’t take them.”

Tybor’s hand shot out and he grabbed one of the candies. Luke was slower, more deliberate.

“Daddy, can we eat them now?”

“You’re ruining their lunch,” I said with an exaggerated sigh, eyeing Mathias without turning away from my boys. Then I bent down to them and said, “Okay, you can have them. Now run along to your room and play while I show Mister Vandergale around.”

“Yay!” Tybor and Luke leaped backward and ran down the hall, their sweet, excited voices echoing around us.

A silence fell between us.

Mathias glanced up at the ceiling, then around at the foyer that opened onto the living room.

I started to ask him to follow me, when he said, quite casually, “Bank guy?”

I blinked, startled. “Uh, he doesn’t know your name. You never introduced yourself to him.”

“No. I didn’t.” Mathias glanced at me, gaze holding mine for a little longer than felt comfortable, then his eyes dropped, grazing over my body all the way down to my feet.

“So,” I said. “I guess we should make this as quick as possible.”

His eyebrows rose.

“The tour.”

“I can already see it’s a very nice house.”

“My Alpha took good care of us. But if it’s too much for upkeep…” I let my words trail off. I really didn’t want to have to move. The idea now, though, was to save as much as I could. Mathias was supposed to be the one to advise me.

“How many bedrooms?” he asked.
