Mathias arranged the papers into the folder and closed it. “Not if it’s approved right away. And it was.”

I wasn’t sure I believed him.

He put the folder into the attaché case and shut the lid on his computer.

There was nothing else for us to do but I didn’t want him to leave just yet. I thought quickly. “You can’t go yet. There’s still apple pie.”

I was grasping, I knew. When Drayden was dating me—the chattel farm called itcourting—he would pick me up and take me out to dinner, then back to his place for an evening of fun. We’d have drinks, watch a movie, and always he wanted to have sex.

It was different for me now. I had kids. And Mathias? I couldn’t tell if he’d ever dated in his life.

Alphas who stayed single for any length of time were usually the sort who weren’t ready for families, drowning in their careers, or they were queer for Alpha/Alpha relationships. Mathias seemed the type who took what he wanted, so if he’d wanted an Omega or a relationship, he’d have had it.

Maybe he was like me and had lost someone?

I hadn’t done this in so long I was wary of breaking the ice with him.

I decided to start with the subject of kids, since it was right there in front of us, the TV in the living room blaring some cartoon.

“So I take it you haven’t been around kids too much? Not that you haven’t treated my two like gold.”

“My twin brothers were their age when I turned eighteen. I am thirteen years older.”

“Identical?”

“Yes. But both Alphas.”

“That’s the usual with identicals. Tybor and Luke are more rare. If you get an Alpha and an Omega in twins, they’re usually fraternal. It’s about one in every ten thousand identical twin births that will result in one of them developing internal Omega organs.”

“You’ve done your research.”

“I wanted to know all I could about my boys.”

“They are mirror twins.”

“Yes,” I replied, happy to hear he knew what that was. “Your brothers… are you close?”

Mathias turned his head as if to dismiss me. But I had begun to learn his mannerisms and I could tell he was actually thinking through his response. This communicated to me he had something to hide.

“Bren and Mica are the twins. I see them on holidays. I’m part of a triplet litter. We’re all different. I keep in touch with Trigg, the third-born.”

“And the other?”

He placed his hand, palm down, on the wooden table and his fingers started to rub the hard surface. “No. But I’ve been thinking about, uh, contacting him. I don’t know.”

“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want.” I got up, grabbed the cider, and poured us each another glass. “I was just asking.”

Mathias shrugged, eyebrows going up. “I rather fucked things up with him, I think. It’s in the past.”

But it wasn’t in the past if they still weren’t speaking. I kept my mouth shut.

Now Mathias turned his gaze on me, dark and unreadable. He took a deep breath, let it out slowly. He started to speak, then closed his mouth.

“What is it?” I asked. “If nothing else, after all you’ve done for me, I can at least return the favor by listening. I’ve been told I’m a good listener.”

“You have kids. Listening is a skill you exercise, I’m sure.” His lips quirked up a little.

“Gods, yes. Those two? Sometimes I can’t get them to shut up.” I laughed.
