“Because it’s no big deal,” I interrupted, taking another bite. It looked good but I tasted nothing.

“All right. Will you agree to let me make an appointment for you? Or do you have your own doctor?”

I shook my head.

“I should have known. Father’s regular planned check ups for us when we were kids made me hate doctors, too, but I have a good one. Okay?”

I grunted. I didn’t want to go, but Trigg would never shut up if I said that aloud.

“Next thing. You brought up Kris’s name. Just earlier you brought up Omega rights.”

“I did not.”

“You said something about bad things happening to Omegas. That is not how you were raised and I never heard you express a single concern about them, including about Kris. Until dinner at Father’s. And just today. So obviously something’s changed.”

I kept eating. If my mouth was full, no words could come out, right? Then Trigg would be shit out of luck.

Trigg sat and watched me shovel in the food. I glanced up, noting the way his chin stuck out and his lips pursed when he was contemplating something. It was a look he’d had ever since I could remember.

“Stop acting like you can read me,” I grumbled, and shoved more food in my mouth.

“But I can read you. Better than anyone. You and Kris. We shared a womb. We’re litter-mates.”

I gulped. “So?”

Trigg narrowed his eyes, half closing them, and almost glared. “What is going on in that dark and beady mind of yours?”

I rolled my eyes.

He slammed his hand on the table. “I’ve got it. You’ve met someone. Oh gods, not just someone. You’ve met an Omega. All this is coming up for you because you met someone!”

I stared back at him, unwavering. “Eat your food,” I finally said.

“That’s it, right? You met someone. Is it an Omega? Or maybe an Alpha, but you aren’t the type to go for that. No, it’s an Omega. You gotta spill. Tell me! How did you meet? Where did you meet? You have a thing for him, don’t you? You do, I can tell.”

“Shut up, Trigg. Just shut up.”

He nodded, a smug smile on his face. “Confirmation. Your words. And you know I won’t shut up about it.”

“This was a mistake.” I shouldn’t have come. I didn’t want to talk about Saber yet.

But Trigg was the only person in my life I trusted. He could keep secrets. He was my litter-mate. And he did know me. All too well.

“It’s not a mistake, Math. It’s a step in a direction I think you want to go. You just have to be brave enough to go there.”

“What do you know? You aren’t bonded, you don’t have anyone steady, do you?”

“Not yet, no. But we’re both young. It can happen any time. To anyone. Maybe not to everyone. Or maybe some Alphas aren’t capable, like Father.”

“I’m not capable. I told you that.”

“Stupid idiot, you don’t know until you ask a doctor. So that’s settled. Besides, it’s mostly up here, right?” Trigg pointed to his head. “The mate-bond is measured in blood, sure, but you gotta feel it. That’s emotional. You might be a bit stunted there, bro, but you’ll work it out.”

Trigg was making a lot of fast assumptions.

“Why are you talking about mate-bonds? I never said I wanted to, just said I couldn’t.” I huffed.

“I know. But it’s on your mind, right?”
