Trigg started to turn, but called over his shoulder, “I’m happy for you, brother.”

“Thanks.”

It did seem my life had taken a better turn. Why was I so hesitant to embrace it?

The boys were so sleepy when we arrived home, we each had to take one in our arms and carry them inside. For the first time since meeting Saber, I helped him with the ritual of putting the boys to bed. Usually, I waited for him in the living room or bedroom for him to complete that chore when I arrived at his house before their bedtime.

But now it felt natural to carry them into their bedroom. I had Tybor and I placed him on his stuff-animal piled bed, helping him off with his clothes and into his PJs which he proudly showed me had trains in a pattern all over them.

I turned to his pile of toys. “Do you sleep with each and every one?” I asked.

He shrugged and reached out to grab a plain brown bear which had been sitting next to the kitten I had given him. “I like this one best.”

“Why?”

“My Alpha daddy gave it to me when I was little.”

I almost chuckled at the wordlittle, but realized he was looking rather grave and solemn.

I sensed Saber watching us, but I pretended not to notice. I said, “I think that’s a very good reason to have that toy as a favorite.”

Tybor took a deep breath, his eyes wide, his lashes glimmering as he looked up at me. Then he knelt up on the bed and put his arms around my waist. He could not reach all the way around me, but he did his best, hugging me as he put the side of his head against my belly.

I wasn’t sure what to do. My hand went to his hair and petted.

“All right, boys,” Saber said from behind me. “Into your beds.”

“Do we get a story?”

“Not tonight. Dinner ran late. It’s waaaaay past your bedtime. You need to go to sleep now, okay?”

Tybor leaned away from me and scrambled under his covers. I helped him pull them up, listening as Saber kissed Luke and tucked him in. Then Saber came to Tybor and did the same.

I backed up and watched. Luke was staring at me with big round eyes. “Good night, Luke,” I said softly.

“Good night, Mathias,” he replied.

The day I had told the boys to address me by my given name had thrilled them. They had been calling meMisterfor days and I hated it. Now it felt just right when Luke said my name.

After we turned out their light and closed the bedroom door, Saber turned to me in the hall.

“Tybor hasn’t brought up Drayden in months.”

“Oh?”

“Thank you for helping me with their bedtime.”

I stared down at him, then reached my arms up and brought him to me. “Your turn,” I said.

Saber chuckled as I pulled him close. “You going to take care of me now?”

“I am.”

In Saber’s bedroom, Saber fell back onto his bed and stared up at me, grinning.

“One day,” I said, standing over him as I took off my jacket and tie, “I’m having you over to my place. All of you. The kids, too. We’ll put them in the guest room. They’ll be fine.”
