Kris shrugged and nodded.

“Wow,” said Trigg.

“I don’t know if I should even be here. I want to make sure he’s okay, but if he doesn’t want to see me--” I said. Air huffed from my lungs too fast.

Trigg put a hand on my upper arm. “You should be here. If he didn’t care, he wouldn’t be behaving like this. I’ll go talk to him.”

Kris and I both agreed.

I watched Trigg move to a barstool alongside Mathias, wave to the bartender, then turn toward him. For a few minutes, I could see him talking to Mathias, whose shoulders got tighter and tighter.

Kris and I sat at a table by the door, nervously watching. The notched wood of the tabletop bit into my elbows. I had my hands clasped in front of my chest and realized they were shaking.

Finally, Trigg and Mathias turned toward us at the same time. They got up. Mathias teetered a little, but Trigg caught his arm and they made it to our table.

When they came up alongside us, Trigg said, “Mathias would like Saber to take him home.”

Mathias wouldn’t meet my eyes, but he gave a quick nod.

A huge weight lifted from my chest. “I can do that.”

What I really wanted to do was hold him to me as close as I could, and sink my face into his hair.

Mathias said, a little slurred, “You didn’t have to come.” Then he got a worried look. “Where are the boys?”

“They’re fine. They’re with a sitter.”

Mathias turned to Kris. “You didn’t have to come, either.”

“Wanted to make sure you were safe, that’s all,” Kris said.

Mathias closed his eyes tight for a moment, breathing in. “Thank you.”

“Maybe you would like some coffee before we go?” I asked Mathias.

He nodded.

I scooted over on the bench and made room for him to sit. Kris rose at that point, and he and Trigg stood side by side, watching.

Trigg said, “If you’re sure you can get him home--”

“Thank you, yes,” I replied.

“We’ll go then. Mathias, call if you need us.”

He nodded.

Kris leaned forward, his blond braid sliding over his shoulder. “Your apology is very much accepted, Mathias.”

“You owe me nothing.”

“Nonetheless,” said Kris. “It is. I thank you for coming by today. And I like your new bondmate.”

Mathias seemed to bristle at the words, but Kris just shrugged and gave a little smile.

Trigg elbowed Kris in the side, shaking his head.

Kris said softly, “Well, it’s so obvious, isn’t it?”
