I decided to get straight to business. “Your expenditures are mainly your house and utilities, a few credit cards and food. Do you have a car?”

“Owned and paid for.”

“Owned by your Alpha, no doubt. We’ll have to see about getting it put into a trust, along with the house, so all of it is under your name but with the bank as signatory.”

Saber opened his mouth as if to make another smart remark.

I cut him off. “It’s for your own protection. So no one can take it from you like your deceased Alpha’s relatives, or someone unscrupulous enough to scam it out from under you. Omegas on their own can never be too safe.”

My explanation shut him up. For the moment.

I scrolled his files for more details.

“Your house payment is pretty high. I see its worth is a bit more than your standard of living should be now that you’re an Omega on your own. Have you thought about moving?”

Saber blinked. “What?”

“To somewhere more affordable?”

A pained look crossed his face. Something inside me I rarely felt gave a twinge in response.

Fuck, I didn’t give one shit about this guy. To prove to myself I didn’t care, I added, “And you are raising an Omega child, which is not required. Wouldn’t it be better if he was brought up with his kind? You know, like a farm where they know how to train them, how to make them be the best Omegas they can be. It would save you money in the long run, too.”

As I saw his face pale in a combination of fear and revulsion, my brother Kris flashed in my mind. A memory of how he’d given me the same look so many years ago.

I was not one to mince words. I stated the obvious. So what if people got offended? That was their problem. But now I remembered Kris’s look of horror when I’d spoken cruel words in anger, in jealousy, and an uncomfortable burning started in my chest.

“Excuse me, but you are probably the rudest Alpha I have ever met!” Saber’s hands gripped the arms of his chair hard, and he started to stand.

I was really going to fuck with Cord when all this was said and done. I didn’t need this bullshit.

“Can I request a different guardian, please? All I need is an Alpha to sign on the account, then give me access, not someone who will question everything I do!”

Had Saber met many Alphas?

“Please sit back down, Mister Volmar. It’s not my intent to question everything you do. But it is my job to make smart financial suggestions. That’s all I was saying.”

“Well, your suggestions are highly offensive!” But Saber sat. Formal. Stiff. And the lilac scent grew stronger. I couldn’t help but breathe deeply of it.

The two identical boys on the couch sat very still and solemn, watching us, eyes wide. I wondered how much they even understood what was going on.

Well, at least they weren’t running around screaming and out of control. The imps clearly loved their father and obeyed him. I conceded that maybe it had been none of my business at the very least to suggest Saber get rid of one of them. If his Alpha, when he’d been alive, had wanted to raise an Omega child, who was I to argue with that decision?

“All right, all right. We can clearly cross that suggestion off the list then. It’s my job to give you the options, that’s all,” I said. “No offense intended.”

“I still want to request another guardian.”

“There are none to be had right now. The bank has assigned you to me. But you can certainly put it in writing to change guardians. The bank takes six weeks to review the claim.”

My voice didn’t sound right to me. It was rough-edged, wavering. The air around us felt suddenly electric and dangerous.

“You can be sure I will do that,” Saber said. “Now, what do I have to do today to keep my access? And how much will you restrict it? Are there guidelines, or is it at your discretion?”

I decided I was done playing roles. Done arguing with sweet-scented Omegas who thought they knew all. It wasn’t my job. I lifted my hands and shrugged.

“I’m not going to interfere with you. Is that what you wanted to hear? It’s not worth the drama. This job is below my pay grade anyway. So, I’ll sign off on your expenditures, whatever you want without question. You seem like you’re fully capable of figuring out your own finances.”

Saber took a deep breath. His head lowered and his eyes glared as though he was waiting for the catch.
