All Alphas were potent, but some more than others. I was one of those who expelled a lot of semen. It was hereditary.

When we finally got up, showered and dressed, the light from the day was intruding in bright shafts along the hallway and from the big windows facing the kitchen.

The other boys were not around, which was good. I didn’t want to feel like I had to explain anything yet.

I made Alli sit while I fixed us a nice brunch of omelets and bacon and fried potatoes. I liked taking care of Omegas, but my mate brought that out in me even more. I wanted to provide for him. Everything. And that meant it was a true pleasure to cook for him.

“Do you have to go to work today?” Alli asked, crunching on his bacon.

“No.”

He grinned. “Is it because of me?”

I gave him a side-long look. “No.”

He pretended to pout.

Later, I had Alli take me into the yard and show me what he had in mind for a garden.

I showed him an entire plot he could have all to himself.

He looked dazed and excited at the same time, the light hitting his eyes and making them glow amber.

“I want cucumbers and squash—it’s so pretty—and peas. And maybe a decorative border of lavender and daffodils. It would be really pretty. Oh! And tomatoes. I want those, too.”

“And you shall have them,” I replied.

For Alli to go from a runaway to this was exciting for me to observe.

Tree shadows dappled the grass all around us. The day was amazing, the sky bluer than I’d ever remembered seeing it.

Together, we mapped out a border along the grass where Alli would have his own bed for growing whatever he wanted.

He looked up at me through squinted eyes, the light on his face brilliant.

“But I’m missing my studies.”

“These are your studies for today,” I said.

He hugged me hard, and the world seemed to shift beneath us, though really it was just him, holding me tight, pressing all his weight and his thoughts into me.

He surrounded me with his light, and a craving, a hunger, a lust. And also, the tender beginnings of love. It was the most serene contentment, like a finished fine meal capped with chocolate and wine, only ten times stronger.

We still had the final consummation to perform. Intercourse and knotting. It would fully satisfy the bond and possibly complete it. I hadn’t decided if I wanted to wait until my Burn, or do it sooner.

Like tonight.

My new mate was just that irresistible.

The irony was, when I’d been searching for Kee, who I thought I’d loved, I’d found my true love out in the forlorn and rancid world of the Trenches.

Fated mates. I thought it was a myth. But everything had happened so fast, and that was what fated mates meant. It astonished me and made me ecstatic at the same time.

I suppose I could no longer disbelieve the myth.

I looked up and over Alli’s head to see Oren coming through the French doors, stepping out to greet us.

We both turned at the same time. Alli went to pull away, but I kept my hand over his shoulders, gripping him harder to let him know it was all right.
