Pliers clicked at my ear. Myre was getting antsy. Wanting blood. Some Alphas just didn’t know when to keep it in their pants.

“How well did you know them?” Myre asked.

“Not well at all. Just in passing. Names. Faces. They repeat. The same people come and go in the Trenches in phases.”

“Did they ever pay for your services?”

They had. Both of them. And they also talked a lot as they fucked me together—as if having a threesome was as boring an activity as eating or sleeping. They dropped names I didn’t know and some I did know. They were full of larger than life secrets and I admit I paid attention. They joked and they always had a lot of drugs to spread around—steam, mainly. They were rich. They bragged about everything, including wealth. They were gamblers who hit a lot of jackpots at the casino.

My face went white.

“Yes.” I held my breath, waiting.

“I see.”

“They—they weren’t friends or anything,” I offered.

“Well, of course not. You wouldn’t sell out your friends to your cop lovers, now, would you?”

Stunned, I tensed so hard the chair rocked. “Sell out?”

“Don’t pretend to be surprised. They were arrested two days ago. One is my beloved cousin I’ve known since childhood. The other a good family friend.”

“Arrested? I don’t know anything about--”

“Your reputation is you get around. You have a big mouth. You talk the big talk like you’re somebody—somebody more than the street scum Omega slut you are. I have spies everywhere. I see with more than just my eyes.”

I clamped my teeth together to keep my jaw from shaking.

“Kee has notoriety on the streets. Others come to Kee, look up to Kee. If they need something, Kee can get it or tell them where to get it.”

It did not appear to bode well for me that Myre had started referring to me in the third person as if I weren’t even here.

“I think you’re smarter than you let on,” Myre said. “I think you listen to and remember every word out of your clients’ mouths, and for the right price, you can provide information to anyone. You’re an unbonded Omega. You obviously have no loyalties.”

“I don’t sell information to anyone!” It was the first lie I’d told during this interrogation. Truth was, I’d do anything for money. And had. And Dill and Guff talked a lot. But no one had ever asked me about them specifically.

A hand clamped down on my wrist. Thick, cold metal touched my pinky finger and the teeth on the insides of the pliers’ mouth dug into my first knuckle.

“When your cop friends came around asking questions, offering you money, sticking their tiny dicks into you to make you cry for more, you spilled anything they wanted to know. They let you go every time. Why? You’re a little infant, sucking at the teat of a drug empire for your cheap highs, buying and maybe even selling steam on my turf, right under their noses. I have your file. You’ve never been arrested. Why is that?”

My words croaked out. “Cops do steam, too. You know that. Half the force is corrupt.”

“Yes, and that half works for me. Which is how I know you have such a big mouth. How I know you’ve been selling information to them.”

Myre nodded his head in the direction of the Alpha he’d called Merch who had his hands on me.

I knew it was happening before it happened. I opened my mouth and let out a strange scream, a sound I’d never heard come from my own throat before.

The click and the pain in my little finger came seconds later, when it was all over. Warmth flooded my whole hand as endorphins kicked in, but it wasn’t enough. The pain nearly made me pass out.

Through my dizziness, I glanced down. My finger was red with blood. He’d cut through the skin. The little finger of my right hand looked flattened at the first knuckle. When I tried to move it, pain like a knife shot through it and into my hand and wrist.

“Now,” said Myre. “Tell me everything you told the cops.”

My scream still echoed in the room. I could hear it over and over in my mind. My breaths came in gushing, quick puffs. Tears rolled like lava down my cheeks.

I wanted to scream again, to beg them to let me go. I wanted to make promises it was too late to make. Offer myself. Give them anything they wanted. If only they’d let me walk out of this room. If only they would let me live.
