Finn hadan odd look on his face when I woke up. “You're back,” I muttered, still feeling sleepy. He was never gone long, but I hated his moments of absence all the same. It wasn't so much that he was going rather thanwherehe was going that bothered me. I knew why he had to do it, but that didn't mean I had to like it. Nu-uh.

“Yeah.” Finn smiled at me when he realized that I was awake. A much better look on him than the somber expression he'd worn before.

Slowly, I sat up. “Is something wrong?”

Finn's face fell again. “I didn't get it.”

“You didn't...Oh.” It took my sleep-addled brain a moment to connect the dots and understand what he was saying. “You didn't get the medicine?”

“No, I'm sorry.” He balled one of his hands to a fist. “But I'm going to get it.”

His aggressive tone of voice alarmed me. Something odd was going on here. “What happened? He didn't like what you brought him?” That had happened to me once, and it wasn't pretty.

Finn shook his head. “Nothing like that. You know the first time I met him he said he was going to ask me for something else on top of the objects I was already supposed to bring him. Well, this time he finally came out with what he wanted.”

My mouth went dry. “What did he want?”

Finn looked at me, and then at my belly. Instinctively, I laid a hand over it.

“What did he want, Finn?”

Finn shook his head again, eyes to the floor. “He figured out that you're pregnant.”

“He what?” I nearly yelled.

“I'm sorry!”

“How could he know?” I asked, feeling myself get hysteric. Jin couldnotknow about this baby. “You didn't tell him, did you?”

“I didn't! He figured it out by himself.”

“Shit.” I put my head in my hands.

“I told him he couldn't have the baby.”

“Of course he can't have the baby!” I glared at Finn and regretted my outburst a second later. It wasn't Finn I was mad at, but I was sick and tired and pregnant--which meant my hormones were amess. “I'm sorry.”

“It's okay.” Finn ran a hand through his hair. “He said he wouldn't deal with me anymore if I couldn't promise him the baby. So... I left.”

I nodded. After all, what else could he have done? What could we do now? I had no idea. “I'm sure the alchemist is working hard to recreate the medicine.” At this point, maybe all we could do was hope and wait.

Finn didn't seem on board with that idea, though. “What if they don't make it in time? We can't take that kind of risk. I won't.”

“What do you want to do then?” I reached out for a glass of water that stood on the night table. “Force him to give you the medicine?”

Finn's silence lasted too long for my liking.

“You're not seriously considering it,” I said. “Oh God, you are.” I couldn't believe it, but my Finn was actually considering violence.

This was exactly why I hadn't wanted him to get in contact with Jin. He put a stain on everything around him, even people as pure as Finn.

I raised the glass to my lips and chugged all the water back. “You can't do that,” I said, putting the glass back down.

“There's no other way,” he said, voice quiet.

“Even if you punch him to bloody pulp, he won't change his stance. He's not that kind of person.”
